2009 All-Washtenaw County Girls Cross Country Team

Girls cross country is the sixth in AnnArbor.com's series of 10 All-Washtenaw County teams from the fall sports season.

DREAM TEAM

Elizaveta Boudreau (sr.), Pioneer: An All-State performance (15th place) at the Division 1 state championships followed Boudreau’s second-place finish at a D1 regional. She ran a season-best time of 18:40 at the Jackson Invitational, where she was sixth. She picked up third-place finishes at the Holly Invitational, two Southeastern Conference jamborees and the SEC Red Division championship.

Kate Carter (sr.), Saline: A tenth-place finish at the Division 1 state finals earned Carter her third All-State honor and helped the Hornets win a team championship. Ran a season-best 18:17 while finishing fourth at the Jackson Invitational and was second to teammate Alex Leptich at three SEC events, including the Red Division championships, and a Division 1 regional.

Alex Leptich (sr.), Saline: Became the second girl in school history to break the 18-minute when she ran 17:54 in a second-place finish at the Jackson Invitational, then did it again two weeks later while winning the Portage Invitational. The Southeastern Conference individual champion finished fifth at the Division 1 state finals, the fourth All-State performance of her high school career.

Jordan Tomecek (sr.), Milan: Before a season-ending injury caused her to miss an opportunity to defend her Division 2 individual state championship, Tomcek won five of the six events she competed in (Milan Puddle Jumper, Artesian Classic, New Boston Huron Invitational, Gibraltar Carlson Invitational and two Huron League jamborees) and ran a season-best 18:25 while finishing second at the Portage Invitational.

Kristen Yarows (sr.), Dexter: The SEC White Division individual champion was seventh in the league’s all-team jamboree. She also had individual victories at an SEC White jamboree, the Gabriel Richard Invitational and a Division 2 regional leading up to her fifth-place finish at the D2 state finals. Her performance at Michigan International Speedway was the third-best by a Washtenaw County runner, regardless of division.

FIRST TEAM CLASS A

Annie-Norah Beveridge (jr.), Huron: Earned her second All-State honor with a 30th-place finish at the Division 1 state finals. The junior was fifth at the SEC Red championships, third at a D1 regional and fifth at the Portage Invitational.

Alyssa Cummings (fr.), Saline: Her third-place finish at a Division 1 regional gave the Hornets a sweep of the top three spots. Other highlights included finishing sixth at the SEC Red championships, 10th at the Jackson Invitational and 40th at the D1 state finals.

Katherine Hoevet (so.), Pioneer: The fourth-place runner at the SEC Red championships, Hoevet would finish 13th in a Division 1 regional and 59th at the D1 state finals. The youngster on the Pioneer roster was also eighth at the Holly Invitational and 26th at the Jackson Invitational.

Tara Jibson (sr.), Pioneer: The senior had two of her best performances in the postseason, finishing seventh at the SEC Red championship and sixth at a Division 1 regional. She placed 46 th at the D1 state finals, helping the Pioneers finish tenth in the team standings.

Karyn Rapundalo (jr.), Huron: In her third trip to the Division 1 state finals, the junior earned All-State accolades with a 23rd-place finish. The SEC Red’s 10th-place runner was fourth at a D1 regional, fifth at the Haslett Invitational and sixth at the Spartan Invitational.

FIRST TEAM CLASS B-C-D

Sarah Falvey (so.), Gabriel Richard: The Catholic High School League’s 11th-place runner qualified for the Division 3 state finals with a ninth-place regional finish, but did not compete.

Lauren Halpern (fr.), Skyline: The upstart Eagles competed among the big schools in the Southeastern Conference, and Halpern finished 13th at the Red Division championship. She was seventh at a Division 2 regional and 45th at the D2 state finals.

Madison Mayleben (so.), Skyline: A Division 3 All-State performer as a freshman, Mayleben finished 31st at this year’s Division 2 finals to miss the honor by one spot. She was 13th at the SEC Red championships and sixth at a D2 regional.

Annie Patton (fr.), Gabriel Richard: Finished second at the Chelsea Invitational, fifth at the Detroit Catholic Central Invitational and sixth at Gabriel Richard Invitational. Missed a Division 3 regional with an injury.

Angela Swain (sr.), Milan: Season highlights nclude a second-place finish at the Carleton Airport Invitational, second at the Artesian Classic and ninth at a Division 2 regional. She led the D2 state championship run through one mile, but severe cramps pushed her to the back of the pack.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Mike Smith, Saline: After building the Saline program into one of the state’s biggest and best over the past 35 years, the veteran coach was finally rewarded with his first state championship. “When you’ve been that close and then you finally win it, that makes it even sweeter in some ways,” Smith said after the Hornets beat runner-up Rockford by 51 points (141-192) on Nov. 7.
