A look at freshmen quarterbacks throughout Michigan football history

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Jay Nicols at bleacherreport.com analyzes the history of freshmen quarterbacks at Michigan, and notes that Rick Leach put together the best game of his rookie season against Michigan State.

Could Tate Forcier follow suit in Saturday's game against the Spartans?

Nicols also looks at Leach's continuing involvement in the program and very public support of coach Rich Rodriguez.

Great article from the link. My all-time favorite QB is Jim Harbaugh because he guaranteed, and delivered, a victory over OSU. Rick Leach may have also done the same thing but I was too young to recall. Anyhow, Tate and Denard are still in their first year, and with Devin coming in next year, our team's depth at the QB is solid. We just need to continue to work hard and Coach Rodriguez will lead us back to righteousness again. Go Blue!

Don't forget that Devin Gardner may be coming here as well. I'm sure he has no intention of sitting the bench, although if he redshirts next year (hopefully) and Tate and/or Denard continue to play well and grow in their positions, that would still give Gardner his Jr. and Sr. seasons to start. We'll see how it all plays out, but right now UM looks solid at QB. As for the article, Rick Leach is my all time favorite UM QB. He was the QB the first time I ever went to a UM game as a kid and it seemed like he was UM's QB forever. Hopefully Tate can have the same type of impact on the program.

Nice link. Forcier is definitely off to a great start at UM. It would be nice if he ended up starting four years; it would mean the QB situation has officially been stabilized. However, we don't know how good Denard Robinson will be. Robinson didn't come to UM to be a four-year backup. I think there is a great chance that we will see the "two-headed monster" at QB over the next four years, with Robinson's role being expanded based on merit. This would also be extremely healthy for the program.
