A-Square Fight Club to host Silver Gloves regional championships at new location

By Pete Cunningham

A-Square Fight Club will host the 2013 Silver Gloves Regional Championships at its new location Saturday and Sunday, January 19 and 20.

The club recently moved from its old location -- near Suburban Cheverolet off of Jackson Road in Ann Arbor -- to an 8,000 square foot facility in Ypsilanti, located at 2287 Ellsworth Rd. The size of the new location allows the club to host events on site. In the past, the club would host events at the Clarion Hotel and State Fairgrounds in Saline, but the new venue is large enough that an outside location isn't necessary.

State champions from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Kentucky will compete at Silver Gloves regional championship for a chance to compete at the national championships January 30-February 2 in Independence, Mo.

Boxers at the tournament will range in age from 10-15 years of age with weight divisions starting at 55 pounds all the way up to 201 lbs. and above. There will be boys and girls divisions.

A-Square Fight Club will not be represented in the competition as none of its fighters won state championships this year. A-Square fighter Jasmine Hampton, 16, who won a national championship in 2012 in the 119 lbs. girls 14-15 year old division will be honored during the event. Hampton is now competing at the senior level.

Admission is $7. For information call 734-585-8823.

This is a much safer version of "fight club", the kind I would actually recommend. Head gear and heavily padded gloves are worn at all times as is headgear. Boxing gets a bad rap, but at the youth level where knocking people out isn't emphasized and proper protection is worn, it's a great sport.

Isn't having an article about Fight Club breaking the first rule of Fight Club?
