Haley Jones, a redshirt freshman goalkeeper for the Michigan field hockey team, was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.

Jones, a Pioneer High School graduate, is one of a handful of Wolverines to earn the honor in their respective sports this week.

A roundup of the honorees:

Haley Jones Field hockey

Jones was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after making 12 saves in two wins this past week. She had five saves in a 2-1 win over New Hampshire on Friday and all seven shots she faced in a 2-0 win at No. 14 Penn State on Sunday. The shutout of the Nittany Lions was Jones' third of the season and lowered her goals-against average to 0.92, sixth-best in the nation.

Soony Saad Men's soccer

Saad earned co-Offensive Player of the Week honors along with Will Bruin of Indiana after recording a hat trick against Kentucky on Wednesday. The freshman scored one goal each in the first and second halves before delivering the game-winner in overtime. Saad also had nine shots in Michigan’s 1-0 loss to No. 23 Ohio State on Saturday. He is currently the Big Ten leader in shots (68) and is second in the conference in goals (7) through the Wolverines’ first nine games.

Lexi Zimmerman Volleyball

Zimmerman was named the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Week after guiding the No. 22 Wolverines to a pair of wins during the opening weekend of Big Ten play. By posting 11 digs against Iowa and a season-high 21 versus No. 14 Minnesota, the senior helped limit Michigan's opponents to .196 hitting percentage. Zimmerman also became Michigan’s all-time leader in assists in the match against Iowa. She added 60 more in a five-set win over Minnesota to bring her career total to 5,144.
