Ben Cronin's injury might force changes for Michigan basketball team; Manny Harris is healthy
Ben Cronin season-and-potentially career-ending injury will have reverberations for the Michigan basketball team.
It could end lead to the removal of a redshirt for either freshman forward Jordan Morgan or Blake McLimans.
While Michigan coach John Beilein said he’d prefer not to burn either player’s year of eligibility so far into the season, it isn’t out of the question.
“We told them both the other day that certainly they are an injury away from one of the other big guys,” Beilein said. “We’re looking at them in a different light than we were when we were very hopeful that Ben would still return.”
Beilein said any decision will be made in consultation with the player and the player’s family.
One thing the third-year Michigan coach isn’t planning on doing is holding any sort of open tryout or bringing another, new player onto the team from the general student population.
“No,” Beilein said. “I do not anticipate doing that.”
Cronin's absence could change how Michigan is recruiting. Although Cronin will remain on scholarship, his grant would no longer count toward Michigan’s scholarship count due to a medical condition.
This would leave Michigan with two scholarships to give out for this year’s class.
Manny Harris feeling better Junior guard Manny Harris has fought a nagging hamstring injury all season. Now he feels he might be close to healthy.
“I’m not just 100 percent,” Harris said. “But I’m definitely a lot better and it’s not going to affect me that much.”
While he said this is the healthiest he’s felt all year, the hamstrings haven’t hurt him too much. He’s been averaging 20.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists for the Wolverines this year, leading Michigan in all three categories.
What has changed for Harris is how he’s been rehabbing. He has a stretching routine of 30 minutes before and after practice and was able to do some rehab work in the pool - something tougher to fit in during the grind of a college basketball schedule because of its aftereffects.
“Just wasn’t really able to get in there because you get sore after the pool and stuff,” Harris said. “Just really have to pick your day with that.”

Shouldn't have counted on Cronin this year anyways. I feel for the kid, but at least he can still get the Michigan education. At the same time Morgan or McLimans should have been involved more knowing that Cronin was still rehabbing from a serious injury, now they may have to use truly inexperienced kids in the big ten season. That is setting up as a nightmare.
