Junior Brandon Sinnery gave the Michigan baseball team its best pitching performance of the season Sunday at Ray Fisher Stadium.
Sinnery threw a four-hit shutout in a 3-0 opening game win -- Michigan’s first shutout of the season -- and the Wolverines followed that with a 7-6 victory for a doubleheader sweep of Illinois.
Making his third start for a pitching staff with a combined 5.58 earned run average (235th-best in the nation), Sinnery struck out nine Fighting Illini batters and allowed two runners to reach third base.
Coley Crank provided much of the offense in the opener for Michigan (11-23, 4-5 Big Ten), going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
He hit his fourth home run of the season in the second inning.
Michigan scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game to win its first Big Ten series of the season. That rally was highlighted by a two-run double from Michael O’Neill, who finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run.
Kevin Vangheluwe, the third of five Michigan pitchers in the second game, picked up the win after a scoreless inning of work. Jake Engels earned his second save.
Adam Davis went 3-for-4 in the second game for Illinois (12-19, 4-5).
