Chelsea volleyball player Tessa Elwart and Lincoln soccer player Will Peet
This week's "Athletes to Know" features Chelsea senior volleyball player Tessa Elwart, who wears high socks to stave off court burn and bad luck, and Lincoln senior soccer player Will Peet, who will be a junior in college when he graduates high school.
Tessa Elwart
Grade: Senior.
Sport: Volleyball.
Accomplishment: Elwart and the Bulldogs recently went 3-2 at the SEC Jamboree, with wins coming against Lincoln, Adrian and Ypsilanti. She is currently second on the team in kills. Elwart is also color guard captain for the Bulldog Marching Band.
Favorite athlete: Two-time Olympic gold medal-winning beach volleyball player Misty May-Treanor.
Favorite class: Physics with Mr. (Eric) Swager. “He’s a great teacher and I like to see how math can be applied to real-life situations.”
Favorite music: The Fray, Rihanna and Blake Shelton.
Superstition: Wearing tall socks. “If I’m not wearing them, I’m worried about having bad luck,” says Elwart.
Future plans: After high school, Elwart wants to study engineering and plans to play volleyball in college.
Coach Laura Cleveland says: "Tessa is very coachable and always wants to get better."
Will Peet
Grade: Senior.
Sport: Soccer.
Accomplishment: Peet, in his fourth year as a varsity player at Lincoln, recently tallied a hat trick in a 4-1 win over Jackson. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Lincoln tied the score early in the second before Peet put the Railsplitters ahead in the 54th minute. Peet added insurance goals in the 75th and 78th minutes.
Favorite athlete: Manchester United/English national team striker Wayne Rooney.
Favorite music: Bob Marley, A Day to Remember and Something Corporate.
Favorite soccer team: Bayern Munich. “My dad is from Germany," says Peet. "I’m a big fan of the national team and a lot of their players are on Munich.”
Favorite class: Biology. Peet has been a part of Eastern Michigan’s Early College Alliance program since his sophomore year. He is on course to graduate high school with enough credits to be considered a junior in college. Peet said he would like go to grad school for marine biology, “somewhere by the ocean.”
Coach Bob Stowe says: "Will is a hard worker and has a nose for the goal."
