Updated: Club Wolverine wins fourth straight State Long Course Swimming title

By Kaleb Roedel

For the fourth consecutive year, Ann Arbor’s Club Wolverine captured first place at the State Long Course Swimming Championships, which were held July 30-Aug. 2 at Eastern Michigan University’s Jones Pool in Ypsilanti.

Long course swimming events are those held in 50 meter pools (Olympic-size).

Club Wolverine, the Age Group program consisting of swimmers ages eight through 21, racked up 3,720 points en route to out-swimming the 57-team field. The Oakland Live Y’Ers placed second (2,954 points), followed by the Novi Sturgeons in third (1,556.50).

A slew of CW's youth swimmers set state and national records. Claiming No. 1 times in the nation were Adam Whitener, Jay Jin, Joshua Ehrman and David Boland who orchestrated first place finishes in the 13-14 year old boys 800-meter free relay (8 minute, 14.72 seconds) and the 400 medley relay (4:08.85). The quartet continued their dominance, breaking a state record in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:44.90, a mere six-tenths of a second behind the existing national record.

Boland and Whitener kept the pace in individual competition. Boland broke a 14 year old state record in the 100 butterfly (58.88 seconds) and Whitener broke a 22 year old state record in the 100 free (53.40).

Other state record-setters included the boys 11-12 400 free relay (Matthew Orringer, Max Cornblath, Daniel Schorin, Kyp Papageorgiou) with a 4:18.02 time and the girls 13-14 400 medley relay (Maddy Frost, Hanna Martin, Avery Evenson, Shannon Cowley) with a 4:39.56 finish.

Club Wolverine concludes the season with the Zone meet in North Dakota, Aug. 7-9, and the USA Swimming Junior Nationals in Seattle, Aug. 10-14.
