Michigan lacrosse opens action as a varsity sport; 2 women's soccer players honored

By Matt Durr

The Michigan men’s lacrosse team opened its first season as a varsity sport Sunday with a pair of exhibition matches at Michigan Stadium.

The team faced Providence and Concordia (Wis.), splitting the pair with an 11-10 (OT) loss to Providence and a 16-3 win against Concordia.

"Great day. Great experience," Michigan coach John Paul said. "Obviously pretty special as it was our first competition as a Division I program. Playing in the Big House -- we all as Michigan people appreciate this opportunity.

"From a lacrosse standpoint we got better as the day went on. That's what we wanted to see today. We came out kind of shaky. Starting out I think the guys were a little nervous. Once they got their feet under them and understood what we were asking of them I thought we played pretty well. But we have a lot to work on."

The matches were the first for the team as a varsity sport after spending the last 40 plus seasons as a club sport.

Fifth-year senior Trevor Yealy scored three goals in the first match and two in the second, and sophomore Douglas Bryant scored two goals in each game.

The team will play one more pair of games this weekend in Philadelphia to finish the fall schedule.

Michigan women’s soccer claims 2 Big Ten awards

After sweeping Iowa and Nebraska over the weekend, two players on the Michigan women’s soccer team were honored as Big Ten athletes of the week.

Sophomore Nkem Ezurike was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week after scoring all three of her team’s goals over the weekend. She had the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Iowa and scored both goals in the 2-1 win over Nebraska.

Senior/junior Haley Kopmeyer was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks. Kopmeyer leads the Big Ten in saves, save percentage, saves per game, and shutouts. She allowed just one goal in the past week while making 16 saves.

Eastern Michigan softball team a leader in GPA

The EMU softball team finished with one of the top team grade point averages in the country. The team cumulative GPA was 3.477, tied for 10th in Division I. This is the eighth year in a row that the Eagles have finished in the top 20.

Michigan soccer upsets No. 19 Penn State

A goal with 63 seconds left on the clock by sophomore Ezekiel Harris propelled the Michigan men’s soccer team to their biggest win of the season on Saturday. The Wolverines upset the No.19 Penn State Nittany Lions on their home field, 2-1.

"This was definitely a complete game for us. Our guys played with an urgency and a focus both offensively and defensively for 90 minutes,” said coach Steve Burns. “I'm so proud of each and every one of our guys and how we battled through some tough conditions against a very good Penn State team."

The team has struggled to a 3-7-1 record, but has started Big Ten season 1-1. The team will be at home Sunday when Big Ten rival Wisconsin visits Ann Arbor.

Dannemiller Freshman of the Week for third time

Michigan volleyball player Lexi Dannemiller was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the third time this season. Dannemiller is the only player in the Big Ten to receive the award three times this season.

Despite losing to Nebraska on Saturday, Dannemiller had one of her best games of the season. She recorded 33 assists and a career-high 22 digs to record her seventh double-double. Dannemiller also recorded 32 assists and nine digs in a victory over Iowa on Friday. She leads Michigan in assists and is second on the team in digs.
