Cold-shooting Eastern Michigan men lose to Northern Illinois, Eagle women beat WMU and more Wednesday results
The Eastern Michigan men's basketball team continued to struggle offensively Wednesday night in a 66-49 loss at Northern Illinois.
The Eagles made 4 of 25 shots (16 percent) in the first half and trailed 28-14 at halftime.
Brandon Bowdry, the only Eagle to make more than three field goals, led Eastern Michigan with 17 points. Antonio Green scored 15 points for EMU (8-21, 4-11 Mid-American Conference), which has lost three straight.
Jeremy Landers paced the Huskies (9-19, 5-10 MAC) with 17 points, while Antone Christian scored 13 and Tim Toler added 12.
The Eagles finish their regular season schedule at 2 p.m. Saturday when they host Akron at the Convocation Center. (EMUEagles.com Story)
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Eastern Michigan 80, Western Michigan 56: The Eagles needed a win and some help Wednesday to be one of four teams to get a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament. They got the win, but not the help.
Four players scored in double-digits for the Eagles, led by Sydney Huntley with 17, as the Eagles began pulling away from the Broncos toward the end of the first half, and went on to win 80-56 on senior night at the Convocation Center.
Unfortunately for Eastern Michigan (19-11, 10-6 MAC), the Eagles also needed Kent State to lose to Akron, but the Golden Flashes didn't comply, beating the Zips 56-53.
Eastern Michigan will now host Miami at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Convocation Center in the first round of the MAC Tournament.
EMU trailed 21-17 with eight and a half minutes left in the first half Wednesday night, but closed the half on a 23-8 run, to take a 40-29 lead into the locker room. The Broncos never got back in striking distance.
Tavelyn James and Paige Redditt scored 16 points apiece, and Cassie Schrock scored 13, to go with seven assists.
Miame Giden scored a game-high 19 for Western Michigan (9-20, 5-11 MAC).
BASEBALL Eastern Michigan 6, Presbyterian 4: The Eagles (5-4) have won four straight after sweeping a two-game set with Presbyterian. Jordan Glover picked up his first win of the season for Eastern Michigan, pitching seven and a third innings, and surrendering just two earned runs. Kyle Peterson hit his first home run as an Eagle, a two-run blast that tied the game in the second.
Florida International 6, Michigan 4: Matt Broder took the loss for Michigan, lasting just an inning and two thirds, as the Wolverines drop to 0-7. Patrick Biondi, Michael O'Neil, Garrett Stephens and John Lorenz all had two hits apiece for Michigan. (Boxscore)
Concordia 6, Bethel 5: Matthew St. Kitts picks up win after allowing two runs off of two hits in eight innings of work. (Boxscore)
SOFTBALL Dutch National Team 6, Michigan 1: Hillary Payne started and took the loss for Michigan, giving up four runs (two earned) in three innings of work. Michigan mustered just five hits, while making four errors. The Dutch were European champions in 2009, and World Championship participants in 2010.
Eastern Michigan 4-4, Florida Gulf Coast 3-0: Lauren Wells struck out nine in a complete game shut in game two, and Nellie Coquillard drove in two runs. (Boxscore)
WOMEN'S TENNIS Miami (Fla.) 4, Michigan 3: Michigan got singles wins from Brooke Bolender (No. 3), Whitney Tanney (No. 4) and Rika Tatsuno (No. 6), but Miami took two of three doubles matches to win the decisive doubles point. (Full Results)
