Michigan didn't appear to make progress in open week; Big Ten race a foursome after Iowa foils MSU and more

Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez and sophomore quarterback Denard Robinson speak on the sidelines during the second half against Penn State on Saturday.

In the five lessons ESPN.com Big Ten blogger Adam Rittenberg learned from Week 9, he lists at No. 3: Rich Rodriguez is in major trouble.

Writes Rittenberg, "Coaches are evaluated on wins and losses, but they're also evaluated on progress. And Michigan didn't make any progress on defense or special teams in its open week."

He ends with, "Rodriguez can't afford another slide and it doesn't get any easier this week against red-hot Illinois."

PU...most good coaches that come in to down programs have it turn around by year 2-3...no worries... Harbaugh would have it turned around in 2 at the most....

Theo Quick, name me one year that RichRod beat OSU... or went to a bowl game.... or won a game of any significance... or one more than 2 conference games... I'll wait... BTW, Henson is your yard stick? LOL!!! I'll take a Chad Henne any day over a Henson.

and don't think every Sparty and Buckeye fan isn't saying the same thing...I never thought I would see a Michigan defense shredded like this!

As a Nittany Lion fan, I fully support retaining RR for as long as he lives. I'd renew his contract now. If that doesn't tell you something, nothing will. The offense was plenty good enough. The defense was just lost. Confused. and can't tackle either. Employing a running QB in the Big Ten is a risky strategy as every team in the Big Ten has at least 1 or 2 guys who can pancake a QB if they catch him and eventually they will. BUT it can work for most of the season. What will not work is to have a defense that either cannot blitz a walk-ob QB or decides not to try, AND can't tackle AND can't cover.....

There should be no doubt any longer that the time has come to sweep RR and his staff out of AA. Brandon needs to do the right thing and the sooner the better!

Sean T. -- I vehemently disagree with the notion on your two points about GRob running his defense and playing Campbell on the D line. Robinson is not instilling good, fundamental tackling technique. I don't care what D is run, if you can't tackle well, you're going to have MAJOR problems. Campbell was on roller skates every time he played on the D line. Facts are he doesn't play low enough and he asked the coaches if he could play O line. Why would we put Campbell on the D line when he doesn't want to be there? The defense is proving to be RR's bane. If the defense continues as it has been playing, I have zero doubt that it will lead to his dismissal. We can't continue to give up key 3rd down conversions and expect to win a single game going forward. The offense is good, albeit young. I'm sure those guys feel like they need to score every time they have the ball. It's way too much pressure, which leads to mistakes, missed assignments, etc. This is an example, in a bad way, of how the O and D feed off each other.

There is a rumor on another site that Gary Mueller is being brought back to coach line backers... Anyone heard that?

The King of Fools came to town Brought by Martin the clown He's in over his head And our Program is dead However, all is not lost 'Ere the leaves covered with Frost The King of Fools will be gone And a new day shall dawn Our program, from the ashes, shall arise When Brandon and Harbaugh become allies. The King of Fools Didn't know the Rules We gave him the keys to the castle and he lost the Crown Jewels Illinois' defense will stifle our offense, again. Their offense will smoke our defense, again. The melt down continues this weekend as the RichRod farewell tour makes it's next to last stop in Ann Arbor.

Sean, Cam Newton is Aubruns offense. I don' think that offense is the problem. Everyone in the world knows Denard is the offense yet he still gets 400+ total yards. The offense is legit. If we had a consistant back it wouldnt have to be all Denard. We have no Steve Slaton. It's not "Big 10 football" but the offense is not the problem.

What we need is a Head Coach that uses discipline and Fundamentals. The offense doesn't have to be fancy but effective and the defense should be tough. I have no clue whom our next coach should be but it has to be better than RR. Everyone feels the defense is disappointing but the true pain is the offense. Why? Well, because our offense from week 1 to week 9 is Denard Robinson! All good offenses run through their QB but ours is the QB and that limits the team aspect of the game. It also makes us predictable even with an exciting player such as Denard. It doesn't take a genius to run RR's sandlot football. As for the defense, I'd almost guarantee, if Greg Robinson was able to run his defense we would be far better on that side of the ball. Why would RR force GR to use the 3-3-5 in his second year with the team? Especially, after having recruited Will Campbell at DT. Just imagine Martin and Campbell playing at the same time!

I would be against giving him another year with a new DC. BUT RR must give up any decisions in the defense. Meaning the 3-3-5 is gone. I'm not going the lie, I love the offense. Look at Oregon and Auburn. I think the future of college football is the spread offense. I don't understand how the 2nd overall offense in all of college football and be 5-3. I don't understand how the defense can be so bad. I can't believe we cannot find a kicker who doesn't kick the ball out of bounds. On another note, how bad was that late hit call in the 4th quarter? That might have been the game. Either way I will not blame a ref for a loss. The team shouldn't have been in that position to begin with.

I see no evidence that RR has the capability of hiring good assistants or advisors. That said, what good will it do to retain RR but hire a new DC? Firing the DC and retaining the head coach is the easy, temporary, solution. How many teams now successfully use the 3-3-5? It certainly appears that RR demands that our D be a 3-3-5, if that is true then no decent DC will want to come to U of M. It is time to man up and get rid of the problem, RR.

Well said PU. The real irony is watching what Shafer is doing at SU. I know it's the Big East but still, they're playing better than UM's D. I'm not ashamed at standing behind this football team and in essence the coach. But enough is enough and it's time to end the experiment. The question is will Brandon give him another year with a new DC?

What's clear is something needs to change with Michigan's defense by next year. There has been NO progress over the last 3 years. In fact, they're getting worse statistically. But, with an extra week to prepare against a hobbled, so-so offense, Michigan's defensive coaches failed utterly with preparing the team. Whether it's strategy, motivation, schemes, or a combination of all, I don't know. But, Robinson appears to NOT be the man for the job. I think if RR stays, Robinson must go. And Brandon will need to step in and help in the DC search process as it appears Rodriguez has trouble selecting the right guy. Just my opinion.

PU MSU All is not lost. If Brandon does his job right, puts together a proper search team and gets the right guy in here, all of which I think he's capable of doing, then Michigan can be relevant again as soon as next season. The kids on the team aren't untalented. They are small, but that doesn't mean you can't win with them if they are properly coached. That's what people need to keep in their heads. If these boys are properly prepared in the fundamentals, there is a solid game plan, and there is flexibility to take advantage of opportunities, then this Michigan team can win. The problem currently is that the existing coaching staff doesn't do any of the above. We get the right guy here, we'll be good very quickly. I'm not saying we'll compete for National Titles like some claimed when we hired the King of Fools, but we'll be relevant when it matters, at the end of the season.

As of last Sat, Michigan had lost to better teams and beat teams they should have. That streak ended against Penn State. The offense played good enough to win, but the defense is terrible. Coming off a bye week I expected the defense to come out fresh. They looked awful. They made a first time starting sophmore quarterback look like Elway. I was the first to defend RR before last weekend as I felt we were sitting where we should be with they player on the field. This is no longer the case. That was a terrible loss. One that probably cost RR his job. I have no clue who will be coaching next year, and if I have no clue then recruits have no clue. It will be 3-4 years after a new coach before Michigan is relevant again. Anyone have any clue when the last time both Mich and MSU lost and Lions won? Crazy weekend.
