Ohio State football players react to new uniforms they'll wear Saturday

By AnnArbor.com Staff

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - By now almost every Ohio State fan has seen or at least heard about the new uniforms the Buckeyes will wear on Saturday (noon kickoff) at Michigan.

The uniform features a white helmet with a red stripe down the middle and numbers above each ear hole. The shirts are mostly white with gray and red stripes on the sleeves and red numbers. The pants are a silvery gray with a block-O on the hip and vertical stripes down the sides.

Anyway, the Buckeyes are excited (for the most part) to wear the new uniforms, which were designed as a sort of loose homage to the 1954 Buckeyes, who won the national championship.

Why they picked the 55th anniversary of that title to honor the team has more to do with Nike marketing and promotion.

Here's what members of the team are saying ...

"I'm sure there are some guys who are very superstitious about (wearing new uniforms at Michigan) but I'm not one of them. Obviously it doesn't take the focus off the game. We know what we have to do and we know what it takes to win a game like this. It's just something a little different." — WR Dane Sanzenbacher.

"They're pretty cool. They're throwbacks, but they're kind of, like, new. I guess they have new fabrics and stuff. To me, they don't really seem throwback. They seem space age." — OL Jim Cordle.

"I love them. I think it's a great look. Honestly I was telling Lew (VanHoose), our equipment manager, that I kind of wish this was our alternate uniform maybe now and again. But I love the helmets. The helmets turned out great. I think this is going to be nice little game for us to look good, but we have to come out and play good. That's my motto: Look good, play good, feel good." — S Kurt Coleman.

"I'm going to look amazing." — LB Austin Spitler.

Spitler, asked if people were making too big a deal out of the new uniforms: "Yeah. I mean, it's just a uniform. It's not going to make us play any better or worse. We can't let it affect us. You've heard a lot of guys say, if you look good you play good. So I think a lot of guys will be feeling like they look good, so maybe we'll play a little better. But I don't know."

And if you lose? "Yeah, it was the change in jerseys, without a doubt," Spitler said in mock disgust. "I don't know. You know. People will find something to blame. There's always something."

Coach Jim Tressel said, to some disbelief, that he had nothing to do with the new design.

"I'm a little old school, but even I'm trying to mature a little bit and embrace things like that," he said.

Tressel said he liked them, then was asked if the uniforms came with an alternate coach's outfit.

"If it does, I don't know. I might be wearing one of those trench coats and a little Paul Brown hat. I'm not sure," Tressel said. "(Maybe a) throwback sweater vest, I don't know."

New OSU uniforms? Who cares. They could wear animal skins for all I care. As long as they lose Saturday.
