After winning his opening-round match of the Ann Arbor City Tennis Tournament 6-1, 6-0, Andrew Emerson was thankful for site director Gary DeGuzeman, not just for managing the rescheduling caused by a thunderstorm, but for introducing him to tennis about five years ago.

“Gary was my first tennis instructor,” Emerson said. “I had suffered a basketball injury and was looking for a sport to get involved with. I saw Ypsilanti Rec was offering classes, and Gary was my instructor.”

Now Emerson is an active 4.0 player and a medical student at the University of Toledo. He made the 45-minute drive up US-23 from Toledo and will continue to each day this week if he keeps winning.

“This tournament is about having a good time,” he said. “I’m going to go out there, play my game and see how far that takes me.”

On the court next to Emerson, Rich Chicoine defeated John Scheuermann, 6-3, 6-1, a recent Ann Arbor transplant from Minnesota.

“I haven’t really played competitively since high school, it was really great to get in some competitive game scenarios,” Scheuermann said.

The 4.0 men’s flight is the largest of the tournament with 41 participants. Because of the rain, competitors that survive will play multiple matches each day for the rest of the week.

The five-day Ann Arbor City Tennis Tournament started Wednesday and concludes Sunday.

Given the proximity and veracity of the storms that hit A2 last night, why on earth were these two still out on the courts??
