Defense dominates in Manchester's Division 6 shutout of Clinton

By Pete Cunningham

ADRIAN -- Manchester High School football coach Wes Gall didn't realize his team had downed a punt on Clinton's 1-yard-line with just a minute to go in the first half of Friday's Division 6 district semifinal against Clinton.

When a running into the kicker penalty was called, Gall decided, rather than to decline the penalty and take the result of the punt, to run the ball on the ensuing fourth and 11.

"I didn't realize they had called it down at the one, one of my coaches told me after. If I would have, we probably would have taken that," Gall said.

Instead he called a draw play and D.J. Hone ran 32 yards for a touchdown in a game otherwise dominated by defense.

"We were just hoping to get a first down, keep the ball in our hands, I'll take it though," Gall said.

The Hone run proved to be all the offense the Flying Dutchmen would need. Manchester scored five more points off of turnovers in the third quarter and held on for the 11-0 shutout to beat their biggest rival at Adrian College's Performance Stadium. (Rest of Story | Boxscore)
