Dexter schools athletic director resigns, citing differences with administration

By Cindy Heflin

Brett Steele, athletic director for Dexter Community Schools resigned Friday, saying his skill set was not right for the job, the Dexter Leader reported.

Steele, in his resignation letter, also said he didn’t "share the same vision and philosophy as the higher administration does," Dexter Superintendent Mary Marshall told the newspaper

The district fired former athletic director Scott Lucas last year.

I don't know why Steele left, but I would like to know - and a whole lot more about where athletics in Dexter are heading. Seems financially self sustaining athletics is an issue - at least based on the survey we received. Also, adding other activities as "pay to do". Not sure this is a smart idea or good public education. I would hate to see kids left out of sports for lack of funds, or for one sport to dominate the costs. Hope to see more in depth reporting on this issue here.

There have been numerous changes in the "upper echelons" of Dexter Schools since the change in superintendent two years ago .... some made public, some not. Some positions have had "multiple" turnovers, as in that of the Athletic Director position. It would be interesting to know what is really going on. If the firings/resignations are all for "legitimate" reasons, why keep it a secret? If not ............................

Annarbor.com please follow up with some real journalism here. Something is going on with the Dexter athletic department. The previous athletic director was fired under strange circumstances and I asked you to look into it at that time and you did nothing. And now six months into his job the new AD is leaving. Put some effort into it please!

Dexter athletics has always been a rather incestuous environment. They hire only those with ties to the schools rather then the best candidates. It maybe the only district that still employes the parents of it athletes as head coaches.Perhaps this athletic director actually had the best interest of the students in mind rather than conforming to business as usual

Maybe he just wants to apply elsewhere? say, Chelsea. They are taking applications.

Yes, it would be great to know what's really going on there. It's pretty obvious as you walk through Dexter High that sports are a REALLY BIG DEAL there.

Great. An article telling us nothing gives us a link to another article that tells us nothing. I wonder why he quit? What were the problems? I do not know why the guy quit other than some generalities.
