Eastern men's track wins 21st MAC Championship and more Saturday results

BUFFALO, NY -- For the 21st time in 36 years, the Eastern Michigan men’s track and field team are conference champions. 


The Eagles began the final day of the Mid American Conference Championships in trailing Akron by 40 points. By the end of the day it was Akron trying to play catch up as Eastern finished with 186 points, 10..5 ahead of the second place Zips 

The improbable Eagle comeback got started early as three Eagles scored points in the first race of the day, the 100-meter dash. Clint Allen took first, Koleon Prescott was third and Jarius Saunders placed seventh. Prescott and Saunders also scored in the 200-meter dash, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

In addition to Allen, six other Eagles took home first-team All-Mac honors and Allen, Prescott, Vanier Joseph and Ackeem Ford won the 4x100 meter relay. Terefe Ejigu (5,000, 10,000), David Brent (3,000 steeplechase), Ackeem Forde (400), Vanier Joseph (110 hurdles) and Cole Sanseverino (1,500) had gold-medal performances on Saturday and were named first-team All-MAC. 


Ejigu was named the most valuable performer and Eastern coach John Goodridge was named coach of the year.

Oliver Walther was also named first team All-MAC after a seventh place finish in the long jump. (EMUEagles.com story


MORE MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD 
Big Ten Championships: Frank Shotwell fell two points short of winning his second Big Ten decathlon, but he eclipsed the University of Michigan record for points in the event by 17 with 7,379 points on Saturday. Minnesota’s R.J. McGinnis won the event. As a team, the Wolverines are in sixth place. (MGoBlue.com story)

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD 
Big Ten Championships: Allison Liske took fourth in the shot put and Emily Pendleton placed seventh to give Michigan its only points of the second day of the Big Ten Championships. The Wolverines are in eighth place heading into the final round. (MGoBlue.com story

MAC Championships: Lauren Quaintance won the 800-meter run for first-team All-MAC honors and teammate Shantavia Williams finished second in the 400 to earn second team honors. Eastern finished in seventh place overall. (EMUEagles.com story

WOMEN'S TENNIS 
Michigan 4, Ohio State 0: Led by junior Denise Muresan’s three set victory in No. 1 singles the fourth ranked advanced past the second round of the NCAA Championships. With the win, the Wolverines advance to play Tennessee in the Sweet 16 in Athens, Georgia on Thursday. (MGoBlue.com story

Michigan 4, Denver 1: The University of Michigan men’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships at Columbus, Ohio. The Wolverines will play fourth-ranked Ohio State Sunday at noon. (MGoBlue.com story

BASEBALL 
Northwestern 10, Michigan 8: Back-to-back home runs by Nick Urban and Ryan LaMarre weren’t enough for the Wolverine baseball team to climb out of the hole it had dug at home against Northwestern. Trailing 7-2, LaMarre and Urban’s power highlighted Michigan’s six-run sixth inning. After taking an 8-7 lead, Michigan coudn't get going again and gave up three runs in the top of the eighth. Toledo 5, Eastern 2: Kendall Lewis carried a perfect game through six innings for the Eastern Michigan baseball team, but it wasn’t enough to push the Eagles past visiting Toledo. Lewis gave up his first hit in the seventh inning and the first run followed soon after in the 5-2 loss. It was Lewis’ first loss since March 14 and first in MAC play all season. SOFTBALL 
Michigan 6, Iowa 0: A night after winning its third straight Big Ten title, the Michigan (46-6, 18-1 Big Ten) softball team capped off its regular season with a 6-0 win in Iowa City. Nikki Nemitz celebrated her 22nd birthday with her sixth shutout of the season from the pitching circle, allowing just one hit. (MGoBlue.com story

WOMEN'S WATER POLO 
Michigan 11, Pomona-Pitzer 3: Brittany May made nine saves and Alex Anderson made five for the Wolverines in net during the NCAA Championship Consolation bracket. Michigan will play in the fifth place game on Sunday against UCLA (MGoBlue.com story)
