Eastern Michigan athletes set academic record with 3.177 cumulative GPA

By Rich Rezler

Members of Eastern Michigan's 19 varsity sports have a cumulative grade point average of 3.177 after the 2012 winter semester, the highest in school history.

That overall GPA got a boost from the athletes' combined 3.120 GPA during winter semester, which was the school's second-best performance, according to a report from the EMU Athletic Department Student-Athlete Support Services.

Fifteen of the school's 19 teams had 3.0 GPAs or better.

"This latest academic report is another example of our entire student-athlete population continuing to improve in the classroom," said EMU athletics director Derrick Gragg.

Gragg also pointed out the teams' success athletically. The men's athletic teams finished as runners-up for the Reese Cup, which is given to the best athletic program in the Mid-American Conference. The football team had its best season since 1995, the men's basketball team won a MAC West Division title and men's cross country and swimming and diving teams won MAC titles.

The women's basketball team won the MAC Tournament and played in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history.

The Eagles' baseball team led all of the men's programs with a 3.302 GPA. The women's cross country team was tops on the women's side with a 3.635 GPA.

There were 28 student-athletes that posted 4.0 GPAs during Winter 2012 while 294, or 61.8 percent, had 3.0 or better GPAs.

"Our Student Athlete Support Services office is proud that our student-athletes continue to challenge themselves in the classroom, Erin Burdis, EMU Assistant Athletic Director for Academics, said in a statement. "Obviously, our staff and student-athletes take pride in academic success and this latest report proves that the hard work is worth the effort."
