Former University of Michigan offensive lineman Kurt Wermers may have been ineligible anyway

By Michael Rothstein

Kurt Wermers spent part of last week making unflattering statements about the Michigan coaching staff, the second time since Rich Rodriguez was hired that a player has taken shots walking out the door.

Except in this case, the former offensive lineman left out one tiny detail: He might have been ineligible anyway.

ESPN.com is reporting Wermers was not enrolled in summer school at Michigan and that academic issues would have kept him from playing in 2009 anyway.

"I really didn't get along with the new coaches," Wermers told the Times of Northwest Indiana last week. "They were bringing in a lot of different kids that were not my kind of crowd. Coach (Lloyd) Carr's staff was a whole different ballgame. It was like a family. But when Rodriguez came in it was a whole different feeling. It was more of a business.

"I figured I'd get out while I could."

Wermers, who is taking summer classes at Ivy Tech in Valparaiso, Ind. according to the Times, is transferring to Ball State. A freshman at Michigan last year, Wermers did not play.

The 6-foot-5, 289-pound Crown Point, Ind. native echoed statements made by another former Michigan offensive lineman, Justin Boren, who left Michigan for Ohio State last year. At the time of his departure, Boren said "family values had eroded" when Rodriguez took over for Carr.
