Former Michigan hockey captain Luke Glendening is headed home to continue his professional career.

The East Grand Rapids native became the first player from the Greater Grand Rapids area to ever sign with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the team announced Tuesday.

The Griffins are an American Hockey League affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings.

Glendening, a 5-foot-11, 193-pound forward, scored a career-high 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) last season. The former walk-on finished his career at Michigan with 70 points and as one of only eight players in program history to be named captain in multiple years.

At the end of last season, Glendening signed an amateur tryout contract with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League.
