Former Michigan hockey player Jack Johnson defends program, coach Red Berenson

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Jack Johnson, a former Michigan hockey player, defended his alma mater after hearing about comments from Kings general manager Dean Lombardi, the Los Angeles Times reported on Friday.

Lombardi, in four-part series on the frozenroyalty.net blog, criticized the Michigan program as "the worst," called Johnson "awful" and said, "This guy has never had any coaching (at Michigan). Jack just did what he wanted."

In the Times, Johnson said, "I'm a Michigan man. I'm very proud of it. I wouldn't want to have it any other way."

Shall we look at Lombardi's record? How many Stanley Cups has he had as a GM. In fact since becoming the President and GM of the Kings in 2006, the Kings could not even be one of the top 16 teams in professional hockey. Now here is Berenson's claim to fame; "Berenson's squads have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of the last 19 seasons. This is the longest streak ever in college hockey history." Berenson's job is to produce great students and athletes at the University of Michigan, NOT for an overblown ego at the LA Kings who has never won anything.

Umm, am I reading this incorrectly or did Dean Lombardi just call Jack Johnson, who plays for him, awful? I guess it makes sense that I just read that Jack Johnson is working out a deal to come to the Wings. Nice.
