Ann Arbor's John Seltzer loses Michigan PGA Championship in playoff

By Phil Lozen

DeWITT TWP. - Polo Field Golf and Country Club head professional John Seltzer lost in a two-hole playoff to Ron Beurman of Jackson at the 89th Michigan PGA Professional Championship at the Eagle Eye Golf Club.

Beurman came from four strokes behind with two holes to play. The 50-year-old director of golf at The Country Club of Jackson was two strokes behind Seltzer, who had led the tournament wire-to-wire until the second playoff hole, entering the final round.

Seltzer expanded his lead to three shots after seven holes and looked like he would cruise to the win. Sean Winters, from the Bloomfield Hills Country Club, started the final round five shots behind Seltzer but got hot in the middle of the round with an eagle on 14 and a birdie on 15. It then became a three horse race.

By the time the lead group headed to the Eagle Eye's infamous island green, par three 17th hole, Seltzer was protecting a one-stroke lead over Winters and a four-stroke lead over Beurmann.

Seltzer's tee shot found water on the 142-yard hole, leading to a double bogey, his first of the tournament. Winters three-putted for bogey while Beurmann made par.

On the final hole of regulation, Seltzer’s layup shot found the edge of a railroad tie. He blasted out and ended with a bogey. Beurmann birdied the hole, forcing the playoff with Seltzer and Winters. Seltzer, after shooting 64-69 the first two days, shot a 74 Wednesday to finish at 10-over par 206. Beurmann shot 70-65-71 for a 206.

Winters was eliminated on the first playoff and when Seltzer bogeyed the second, Beurmann’s par was good enough to win the $7,000 first place prize.

Frank McAuliffe of the Ann Arbor Country Club finished tied for eighth after a final-round 74.
