Matt Paterini of Saline shot a 1-under par 71 Monday at Barton Hills Country Club and is three strokes off the lead after the first round of the Golf Association of Michigan Championship.

Paterini, the 2010 Ann Arbor City Golf Tournament champion, is tied for fifth place with Carson Castellani of East Lansing. Jared Dalga of Grand Rapids shot a first-round 68 and leads Drew Preston of Ada by one shot.

Marty Jeppesen of Ypsilanti shot 72 and is tied for seventh place. Aaron Peterson of Ann Arbor (73) is tied for 13th. Casey Baker of Ann Arbor, the defending champion, shot 75 and is tied for 26th.

The two-day tournament has a field of 83 golfers and concludes Tuesday.
