Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon talks a little trash ahead of golf showdown with Michigan State

By Kyle Meinke

Watch out, East Lansing.

Dave Brandon is bringing his trash talk to a golf course near you.

The Michigan athletic director has assembled a five-person team that will face his Michigan State counterpart, Mark Hollis, and a team of Spartans on Monday at Eagle Eye Golf Club.

But to Brandon, it’s already over.

“I don’t think there’s any question Michigan is going to win this,” he proclaimed Friday. “We go into any competition with the expectation to win, because that is what we do.”

The match between Big Ten athletic directors and in-state rival schools begins with Michigan teeing off at 1:30 p.m. Monday. The Spartans tee off at 1:40 p.m.

The Wolverines’ team:

  • Brandon.
  • Lion Kim, who played in the Masters in April as the 2010 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion and recently finished his golf career at Michigan.
  • Jay Feely, a kicker with the Arizona Cardinals.
  • Andy Matthews, the reigning Michigan Tournament of Champions winner who is a regular on the Nationwide tour.
  • Elaine Crosby, a longtime LPGA Tour player.

They’ll face this lineup from Michigan State:

  • Hollis.
  • Ryan Brehm, an assistant MSU golf coach and two-time Michigan Open champion.
  • Jimmy Chestnut, the 2008 Michigan Amateur champion
  • Jack Newman, the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion
  • Sue Ertl, an LPGA Tour veteran.

Hollis announced via Twitter the two best balls will score per hole for each team.

Brandon announced via Twitter the format is inconsequential.

“My team is in our game week prep for @B1GADGolf!,” he tweeted. “@MSUAD 's team is clearly the favorite playing on their home course- but THIS IS MICHIGAN!”

Hole-by-hole updates will be provided via Twitter from @B1GADGolf and with the hashtag #B1GADgolf.

Brandon said original plans for the event included all of the Big Ten’s athletic directors, but the logistics of pulling it off proved too much.

“We started having conversations about doing this across the conference, but with the geography, and everyone’s schedules, things get complicated,” Brandon said.

He said he’s hopeful the golf challenge will return next year, with it shifting to a course in Ann Arbor and featuring more of the league’s ADs.

“For right now, though, make no mistake about it,” Brandon added, “we’re both very much interested in taking home that trophy.”

Dave, it's nice of you to take time out of your busy schedule to teach little brother how to play golf.
