Polo Fields pro John Seltzer sets first-round course record, leads Michigan PGA championship

By Phil Lozen

EAST LANSING - John Seltzer of Ann Arbor short a course record 64 in the first round of the Michigan PGA Professional Championship. He followed that Tuesday with a second-round 69 and takes a two-stroke lead into today's final round.

The 31-year-old head professional at The Polo Fields Golf and Country Club got off to a fast start Monday at the Hawk Hollow Golf Club by birdieing four of his first five holes.

The PGA Championship is played on the two championship courses at Hawk Hollow properties, Hawk Hollow and Eagle Eye Golf Clubs. Hawk Hollow is considered the easier of the two courses by most of the professionals, including Seltzer. "But I never really played very well on Hawk. My best score prior to today was a 71,” he said.

In Tuesday’s second round on Eagle Eye, Seltzer continued his solid play, shooting a 3-under par 69 with four birdies and one bogey. That left him two strokes ahead of Ron Beurmann of Jackson, who nearly tied Seltzer’s course record with a 65 on Hawk Hollow. Seltzer is one of two players to card rounds in the 60s in the first two rounds (Ian Ziska of Manistee shot 69-69).

Seltzer’s 11-under par performance didn’t surprise him. “I wasn’t nervous today. It was really a boring round. I hit it very nice today. I just couldn’t hit it as close as I did yesterday,” he said.

“I really didn’t have any high expectations coming in,” the second-generation golf professional said after his opening-round Monday. “Sometimes great things happen when you least expect it.”

Selter's father, Jack, won this tournament in 1988 when it was played at Indianwood.

Frank McAuliffe of Ann Arbor Country Club shot 68-73-141 and is in sixth place. McAuliffe carded six birdies en route to a 68 playing Hawk Hollow on Monday.

Other local players include: David Horstman, Eagle Crest (75-78-153, T87); Rocky Mullendore, Travis Pointe (77-78-155 T103); Adam Howe, Travis Pointe (78-82-160 T122); Craig Piscopink, Eagle Crest (80-81-161 T128); Brian Stange, Ann Arbor Golf Outing Club (84-77-161 T128).

Seventy-one players made the 36-hole cut. The purse is $50,000. The winner’s share is $7,000. The public is welcome to attend. There is free parking and no admission.
