Guard Derek Thompson transfers, joins Eastern Michigan basketball team

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Derek Thompson, a 6-foot-3 guard, has transferred from the Southeast Missouri State basketball program to Eastern Michigan.

Thompson, a Melvindale High School graduate, averaged 8.4 points a game and made 47 3-pointers in 29 games with Southeast Missouri State.

"We are extremely excited to have Derek Thompson on our squad," Eastern Michigan basketball coach Charles Ramsey said in a statement. "He is a great young man and a gifted basketball player and will be a valuable addition to our program.

"I want to thank SEMO Head Coach Dicky Nutt for allowing Derek to transfer to be close to home. His family is facing some major health challenges and having Derek close to home will ease some of those burdens. We are petitioning the NCAA for a hardship waiver for Derek to become immediately eligible to play."
