Hawaii ends Michigan volleyball season in regional final; Penn State and Minnesota advance

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- After feeling snubbed when it received a No. 12 seed in the NCAA women's volleyball tournament, the University of Hawaii advanced to the sport's final four by sweeping Michigan late Saturday night.

Ranked No. 3 in national polls, Hawaii topped No. 16 Michigan 25-23, 25-19, 25-18 in an NCAA regional final at Stanford's Maples Pavilion.

The 26-10 Wolverines, making the first regional final appearance in program history, struggled offensively with a .181 attack percentage and didn't record a service ace.

Sophomore Alex Hunt was a bright spot, according to MGoBlue.com, registering a team-high 13 kills. Junior setter Lexi Zimmerman posted 32 assists in the loss. Hunt and junior setter Lexi Zimmerman, who had 32 assists in the loss, were named to the all-region team.

"We sat in a restaurant in Brazil way back last May and this team talked about wanting to be in the Final Four," Michigan coach Mark Rosen said in his post-game press conference "That is a lofty goal, but we came one win away from achieving that.

"This team, this senior class, will be forever able to look back and say that they were the group that took this program to the next level. It has been building up and up for a few years now, but this is the group that has raised the bar now for everyone who wears the block M after them in this program."

Hawaii sophomore Kanani Danielson, named the region's most outstanding player, had 11 kills to lead the Rainbow Wahine to the Final Four for the first time since 2003 and ninth time overall.

While Michigan's season ended, Penn State and Minnesota will represent the Big Ten at Thursday's NCAA semifinals in Tampa, Fla.

Top-ranked Penn State (36-0) beat California 25-18, 25-17, 25-22 in Gainesville, Fla., to advance in its search for a third straight national title. The sweep stretched the Nittany Lions' record-win streak to 100 matches and gave coach Russ Rose his 999th career victory.

The Nittany Lions will play Hawaii in one semifinal.

Minnesota (28-8) beat No. 3 seed Florida State 25-20, 25-7, 18-25, 25-17 In front of a home crowd in Minneapolis. The Golden Gophers will meet Texas (27-1), which beat Nebraska in the other regional final.
