2010 All-Washtenaw County Field Hockey Team

By Josh Coudret

Field hockey is the sixth in AnnArbor.com's series of 10 All-Washtenaw County teams from the fall sports season.

DREAM TEAM

Lexi Collins (jr., D), Huron: The River Rats junior defender and co-captain was the last line of defense for the state champs, but she also scored eight goals (tied for third most on the team) and added an assist.

Theresa DiDonato

Theresa DiDonato (sr., F) Huron: DiDonato scored nine goals for the River Rats, two of which were game winners and none more memorable than the overtime winner in the championship game against Pioneer. DiDonato also had two assists.

Megan Flocken (so., M), Dexter: The only sophomore on the “Dream Team”, Flocken scored 15 goals - four game winners - and had 11 assists, leading the Dreadnaughts in both categories. Flocken, a two-year Washtenaw Whippets player, helped Dexter finish second in Division IV in its first season as a program.

Casey Fry (sr., M), Washtenaw Whippets: Field hockey’s gain was Fry’s loss through her career as the birth of programs in Saline and Dexter meant less teammates for her. Fry was one of only two returners from the Whippets this year, and she scored five of the team’s 11 goals on the season.

Kasey Gardiner

Kasey Gardiner (jr., F) Greenhills: Though Gardiner doesn’t quite dominate the field like she does the tennis court, her competitive drive and athleticism have made her a key to the Gryphons’ offense. After not playing field hockey her sophomore year, she led Greenhills to a third-place finish in Division II.

Kelsey Gradwohl (jr., M), Huron: The Ann Arbor.com Player of the Year led the River Rats in goals with 11 and also added seven assists. Her ability to make plays, finish, and organize her team helped Huron earn a state championship.

Emy Guttman (sr., F), Pioneer: The senior forward led the Pioneers in scoring with eight goals this season. Guttman will continue her field hockey career at the University of Michigan.

Emma Hamstra (sr., G), Pioneer: No one in the state was more solid between the pipes than Hamstra, whose athleticism frustrated opponents to no end. She finished the season with seven shutouts.

Anna Masini (jr., D), Huron: Another member of the strong River Rat junior class, Masini was often charged with unenviable task of marking the opponents strongest attacker and was very effective in utilizing her speed and length defensively. Also had five goals and five assists.

Taylor Standiford (jr., F), Huron: The set up player for Huron’s high powered offense, Standiford had a team-high 17 assists this season, including the pass that led to the game winning goal in the state finals. She also had three goals to give her a team-leading 20 points

Sydney Supica (jr., M), Pioneer: As a midfielder and defender, Supica scored the third-most goals on the team, including the overtime game-winner against Grosse Pointe South to put the Pioneers into the state finals.

Megan Wesner (jr., G), Huron: This first-year varsity player was perfect in the playoffs, saving all nine shots on goal in the team’s four games. Two of those saves were against Pioneer in the finals and six were against Detroit Country Day in the quarterfinals. Wesner only allowed two goals of the six the team allowed for the whole season as she shared time in net.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Tia Sutton, Huron: In just her second season as head coach of the River Rats, Sutton led Huron to a state championship after finishing runner-up the year before. Despite losing 12 seniors from that 2009 squad, Sutton had the River Rats in top form and will have the luxury of a large returning group next season.
