BRIGHTON -- The Saline High School boys and girls cross country teams were nearly carbon copies of one another Saturday at the Island Lake Recreation Area in the South Lyon Invitational.

Both teams had three runners in the top ten and both won invitational team titles with near identical point totals (54 for the girls, 51 for the boys.)

Alyssa Cummings finished second overall with a time of 19 minutes, 29 seconds. Behind her were teammates Amy Creutz (4th, 20:00), Kristen Green (7th, 20:14), Kelly Hall (16th, career-best 20:49) and Emily Reyst (25th, 21:30).

"We're off to a good start," Saline girls coach Mike Smith said. "When it's this early, it's hard to say, but we had high expectations and thought we did pretty well."

Smith said it was good to see some of his younger runners do well this early in the season.

"Quite a few of our younger kids were in our top five," he said. "Four of them are sophomores. We're getting some great performances like that to help things out."

In the boys race, Nick Renberg led the Hornets with a second-place finish in 16:41. Saline finished 41 points ahead of second place Novi.

"Renberg had an outstanding day," Saline boys coach Carl Spina said. "Spencer Bishop ran really well too. Both of those guys made a lot of progress since last year. This winter, spring and summer, Bishop has been really focused and he's stayed healthy. That's the best he's ever run."
