An early look: Using qualifying times, Huron girls track team a state title favorite

By AnnArbor.com Staff

There will be 34 Division 1 state track and field championship events contested at Rockford High School on Saturday and Washtenaw County athletes will be part of 32 of them.

AnnArbor.com used an overcast Sunday afternoon to start breaking down the fields at the weekend’s four state championship meets. We’ve started with Division 1. A complete list of local qualifiers can be found after the jump.

Watch this space for updates on the other divisions, and more extensive previews, later this week.

Using the MHSAA qualifying times and distances as a guide, we also projected the favorites to win team state titles.

Using that data, Huron High School should be considered the favorite to win the school’s first girls team championship. The River Rats had the best qualifying mark in the 400-meter dash (Maya Long), the 800 relay and the 3,200 relay to go with three second-best marks in the 100 dash (Cindy Ofili), 200 dash (Long) and 1,600 relay.

Dexter, Pioneer, Ypsilanti and Lincoln should all be in the thick of a battle for a top-10 finish.

In the boys finals, two-time defending champion looks poised to make it three in a row. Detroit Catholic Central and Pioneer (runners-up in 2010) should be the top challengers.

Pioneer's Drake Johnson has the best qualifying time in the 110 hurdles and Kyle Foster is second in the high jump.

Here’s a closer look at each event, with the top seed and all local competitors listed. The top eight finishers score at the state meet, following a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system.

@gern blanstead Dynasty McGee ran 53.8 last season no girl in Wastenaw county has ever ran that fast. In March she was National Runner-up in the 400 meters. Could she be injured maybe she had a bad day but for you to say she has been done since Junior High means you haven't been paying attention to High school track. She will place in every event she runs. Don't count her out she may win every event. <a href="http://www.nationalscholastic.org/outdoornats/result/868/" rel='nofollow'>http://www.nationalscholastic.org/outdoornats/result/868/</a> Girls 400 Meter Run Championship ========================================================================== Sections 1-2-3 @ 1:50pm; Sections 4-5 @ 5:50pm National: N 50.69 6/22/2002 Sanya Richards, Aquinas, Ft Laudrdl,FL Meet: M 52.04 6/17/2006 Jessica Beard, Euclid, OH Freshman: F 52.15 8/2/2009 Robin Reynolds, Jackson, Miami, FL Sophomore: O 51.70 1980 Denean Howard, Kennedy Granada Hills CA Junior: J 50.74 6/3/2000 Monique Henderson, Morse, San Diego, CA Senior: S 50.69 6/22/2002 Sanya Richards, Aquinas, Ft Laudrdl, FL Name Year School Finals H# Points ========================================================================== 1 2150 Briana Nelson 10 Una-Sc-Green 53.14 5 10 2 118 Chamique Francis 11 Benjamin Car 53.20 5 8 3 1997 Dynasty McGee 11 Una-Mi-Ypsil 53.93 5 6 4 2016 Sanura Eley O'Reil 10 Una-Nc-Fayet 54.19 5 5 5 119 Ahtyana Johnson 11 Benjamin Car 54.23 5 4 6 2432 Blessing Mayungbe 10 Wings Tc-Hous La 54.29 4 3

If I am not mistaken, the varsity girls track team of Grosse Pointe South are the heavy favorites. They won their regional scoring 210 points! Why no mention of them?

Too bad this is not how times flush out. The regional results never tell the whole story. For instance, in the pole vault, you have the best vaulter in the state at 15 feet several times this year listed at 12'10&quot; taking 6th., he will most likely win it. Same with Steven Bastien from Saline. He was running hurdle races during the pole vault and trying to score team points. He is probably going to go AT LEAST 14'6&quot; if not 15 feet at the state meet. Horner, Bastien and Rocky Shilke from Saline could take 1.2.3 in the vault. With bastien's first meet without having to do 4 events, a one event concentration on the pole vault could bring a 15'5&quot; jump. Alanvia has gone 14'7&quot; once. He will not win this meet. In the 200, you have Spuller winning. The fastest time in the state in the 200 is Zeke Famiano from Traverse City West at 21.62 to spullers 21.7. If Famiano does not win it, I will eat my hat. You don't even have him listed here. In the long jump you bastien listed 10th...did you see him drag his hand a foot behind him on his 21'5&quot; regional jump. He could win the state meet at 22'8&quot;. This year Drake Johnson will take second in the hurdles. Saline won't score 2 points, try 15 in the pole vault alone, and maybe another 10 from bastien in the long jump for 25. Add a place in the 200 from Roemer and two relays for a solid 32 points or so. Had they not pulled up lame in th 4 x200 and 4 x100 they would be in the 35 plus point range, in excess of Pioneer who they killed at the regionals. And Dynasty Mcgee can't finish a race any more. She reached her peak in junior high, was full grown. If she dies as back at the state meet as she did in regionals, the won't place in anything.
