Arbor Prep trying to follow up on 'perfect' performance in early season rematch

By Kyle Austin

The Ypsilanti Arbor Prep Gators boys basketball team's game against Riverview Gabriel Richard is one of several that AnnArbor.com will be covering on Friday night. Check out a preview of the Gators' early season rematch and check out what other games are going on in the area tonight. Check back later for stories, stats and photos from games across Washtenaw County.

Following perfection

Ypsilanti Arbor Prep has played only three games this season, but coach Don Spencer has already seen his share of ups and downs.

“It’s kind of great moments of brilliance and then absolute chaos,” Spencer said. “It’s been a little bit of both to say the least.”

Such is life in a second-year program with five freshmen, two sophomores and no seniors (the school won't have all four grades until next year).

But for 32 minutes last week, everything came together.

In their season-opener against Riverview Gabriel Richard, the Gators scored 19 fourth-quarter points and won, 53-49.

“We just played perfect basketball that night on both ends of the floor,” Spencer said.

Since then, Arbor Prep has dropped its last two games. It will face off against Riverview Gabriel Richard again Friday night, 7:30 p.m. at home.

To be playing a rematch in the fourth game of the season is a reality of being a second-year independent team. But Spencer sees it as a measuring stick.

“I think it works better for those guys for them to kind of get a chance to work on some things, and then for us it gives us a chance to really see where we’re at from the last game in the quick turnaround,” Spencer said.

One of Arbor Prep’s surprise scoring leaders early on has been freshman Adrian Harrison, who went for 16 points in the season-opener and 14 against Southfield Bradford three days later, both coming off the bench.

“He’s a kid that once he gets it going offensively, he can really, really put the ball in the hoop,” Spencer said. “It’s just everything else we have to work on.”
