This week's Athletes to Know features Saline volleyball player Mackenzie Schumborg and Dexter cross country runner Taylor Neely.
Mackenzie Schumborg
Class: Senior.
Sport: Volleyball.
Accomplishment: Led her team with 20 digs and was a defensive pillar in a 3-1 win over Pioneer on Sept. 20. Schumborg's timely defense helped keep Saline in the game and has been a strength all season.
Other sports: Also plays soccer and is considering playing in college.
Future plans: Wants to be an orthodontist and is hoping to attend Michigan, Virginia, Kentucky or Indiana. "I loved having braces when I had them," she says.
Favorite movie: The Proposal.
Favorite Music: Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and Joe Nichols.
Favorite class: Psychology.
Role model: Her grandma. "She's been very successful and has such a positive attitude in life," Schumborg said.
Coach Lisa Shea says: "(Schumborg) sticks her head in there and she gets it done. She's competitive and you can't teach that. She's a great kid and a good teammate."
Taylor Neely
Class: Senior.
Sport: Cross country.
Accomplishment: Finished with a time of 16 minutes, 47.8 seconds at the first Southeastern Conference jamboree of the season. Neely's time was good for sixth-place individually and helped his team finish second in the team standings.
Why cross country?: "It's really nice to put something out there and see immediate results," says Neely.
Favorite movies: He loves "bad" science fiction movies.
Favorite music: Electronic music. Particularly Skrillex and Deadmau5.
Favorite classes: Science, biology and chemistry.
Future plans: Wants to run cross country for an Ivy League school and study either biological engineering or bio-medical sciences.
Team goals: "We've always taken the slow approach. Stay low profile and start working our way up."
Coach Takashi Gould says: "He's a great kid, a smart kid. Taylor is definitely the heart and soul of our team."
