Chelsea boys tennis splits in season-opening quad

After breezing by Riverview in 8-0 fashion, the Chelsea High School boys tennis team was put on its heels.

The Bulldogs nearly went blow-for-blow with Haslett before coming up short in a 5-3 loss, finishing 1-1 in a season-opening quadrangular Thursday in Chelsea.

"Haslett and Chelsea are both very similiar; it was a pretty even match," said Chelsea coach Rahn Rosentreter, whose team snagged a singles win and a pair of doubles wins in the match.

More coverage on MLive.com: Chelsea-Riverview Boxscore | Chelsea-Haslett Boxscore Earning a win at No. 3 singles was Henry Rutherford, who topped Haslett's Scott Mason 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs' Aaron Zynda and Henry Mountain won at No. 2 doubles and Nick Young and Nate England won in the No. 4 bout.

In Chelsea's sweep over Riverview, Rutherford had the most convincing win, routing Joe Byrd 6-1, 6-0.

"It was a good opening day for everybody," said Rosentreter. "Everybody got a lot of tennis in.

"We're not where we want to be yet, but then again it is only August ..."
