It wasn’t the way Garrett Gordon wanted his last game to go.
Selected as the honorary captain to lead a group of 27 Saline High School seniors onto the field, Gordon did not want his last game to be marred by two lost fumbles and an interception.
But with Saline clinging to a late 20-14 lead oer Chelsea, those were the plays that stood out for the senior who has been Mr. Everything for his team all year.
Then, with 2:14 remaining in the game, Chelsea stood on its own 20-yard line with one last chance to mount a comeback. On first down, Gordon broke through the line, untouched, for a sack on Chelsea quarterback Brian Paulsen. Two plays later, it was Gordon, again, bursting through the line and laying into Paulsen for his second sack in three plays.
Paulsen threw an interception on the next play and Gordon’s forgettable start was overshadowed by a memorable finish. And with the 20-14 win, Saline overcame its forgettable 2-3 start to the season to finish as a playoff team.
