Things don’t always end how they start.

That was not only the story of the Manchester High School volleyball team's 3-1 loss to Clinton in Thursday’s Class C District 70 final, but of the Flying Dutchmen’s entire season.

Things started out well Thursday night as Manchester held Clinton off for a 27-25 win in the opening game. The Dutch served well, picking up three aces in the game, and got their offense working as sophomore middle blocker McKenna Erkfritz had her way with Clinton, tallying seven kills in the set. Manchester also passed well, not allowing any Clinton aces.

In the second set, after allowing Clinton to get off to a 7-2 lead, Manchester went on a 9-0 run thanks to four aces from senior Amanda Davis and three more Erkfritz kills. Manchester led 18-15 following a pair of aces from senior Halley Cook and a kill from senior Taylor Parks.

That’s when everything changed.

Clinton went on a 10-0 run to win game two, 25-18. In that run, Clinton got kills from four different players and a pair of aces from senior Rachel Miller. After that run, Manchester only managed to string together three points in a row one more time the rest of the night as Clinton took the final two games 25-14, 25-16, knocking Manchester out of the district playoffs for the second year in a row.
