Whitmore Lake High School boys basketball coach Dave Arnold subs his players every 45 seconds. In the Grinnell College system Whitmore Lake runs, the Trojans are constantly pressing on defense and shoot well over 100 shots per game, most of them 3-pointers, so he needs his players to have fresh legs.

The student section has adjusted to the system.

No one stood until Whitmore Lake's Tim Avey hit a buzzer-beating layup to pull within four of Clinton at the end of the third quarter on Tuesday night. With a share of the Tri-County Conference title on the line, the students knew they'd need their energy for the fourth quarter.

Three times in the final quarter the Trojans (14-6, 12-3 TCC) launched potential lead-grabbing 3-pointers, each shot nearly sending the section into hysterics. But each rimmed out, as they had all night, and Clinton held on to win 92-83.

Clinton (15-4, 13-1 TCC) never trailed in the contest and avenged its only conference loss of the season to win the conference title outright.
