Conference play in full swing on week 4 of the high school football season
Last week was one characterized by crazy endings in the world of sports and beyond.
The Michigan-Notre Dame game on Saturday proved that no matter how poorly you start, there's always a chance to come back. The series finale of the HBO’s "Entourage" on Sunday proved that no matter how strong you start, there's always a chance to suck at the end.
The Milan High School football team's finish against New Boston Huron fell somewhere in between, with a breathtaking comeback and strong finish by the Big Reds, but also heartbreaking disappointment.
Milan coach Jesse Hoskins went from witnessing his team pull off one of the gutsiest calls in football to one of the most maddening.
The Big Reds converted on a two-point conversion to take a 21-20 lead with less than one minute to play, choosing to go for the win instead of the tie and having the gamble pay off. The team's elation waned when New Boston took the lead back with two seconds on the clock.
The creative minds behind "Entourage" have one opportunity to redeem themselves with the upcoming movie, which will almost certainly be terrible, but have for the most part blown it. The same isn't true of Milan, which has a minimum of six more opportunities at redemption this season.
The positives that can be taken away from his team's 13-point fourth-quarter comeback aren’t lost on Hoskins, despite the end result.
"We do have young guys, and they played hard and we battled back," Hoskins said.
Right away Milan (1-2, 1-1 Huron League) gets 3-0 conference rival Grosse Ile, which is ranked 10th in the first Associated Press Division 4 poll of the year. It's a tough draw for the Big Reds after such a crushing defeat, but it’s a challenge the Big Reds should be up to. Milan 21-20.
More picks:
Reese Dils and the Saline High School football team face Pioneer this week.

Anybody who beats my picks will be entered into a drawing to win some sort of prize each week. If your picks are perfect, you win the prize automatically.
Last week's prize was an AnnArbor.com T-shirt, but sadly nobody beat me. Don't feel too bad, I am REALLY smart. So smart the bosses are gambling on me this week and in an effort to increase participation have approved a $500 grocery store gift card giveaway to anyone who beats my picks this week.
OK, so that's not entirely true, but I got you're attention didn't I? This week's prize is a T-shirt again. Picks need to be in my email inbox before 7 p.m. on Friday. Good luck!
Saline (2-1) at Pioneer (1-2): Pioneer looked lost on offense for three-and-a-half quarters against Ypsilanti last week. Not as much room for error against SEC Red foe Saline. Saline, 30-24.
Huron (1-2) at Temperance Bedford (2-1): The Kicking Mules are really good again this year. Though it's a long way to drive to possibly see a running clock, you might win a free car courtesy of Bedford's new field sponsor Grogan's Town Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge. Bedford, 50-15.
Monroe (3-0) at Skyline (2-1): Monroe was tough to peg last year. At times the Trojans were the best team in the SEC, and at others looked like the worst. Looks like they've solved their inconsistency issues, but all bets are off on this one. Monroe, 31-30.
Chelsea (2-1) at Ypsilanti (1-2): Hard to go against Berkley Edwards and the Bulldogs after his 292 yard, five-touchdown performance against Skyline last week. Chelsea, 24-8.
Adrian (2-1) at Dexter (1-2): Dexter quarterback Mike Mioduszewski did his best Steamin' Willie Beamen impression last week by accounting for all but three of his team's 512 total yards of offense (333 passing, 176 rushing) and having a hand in six of its seven touchdowns (four passing, two rushing) in a losing effort. But Sebastian Johnson and the Adrian Maples are the class of the SEC White until someone proves otherwise. Adrian, 42-13
Willow Run (1-2) at Ecorse (2-1): An Ecorse win will already clinch first place in the East Division of the newly formed Michigan Metro Athletic Conference. Hopefully next year the MMAC can add some more teams and some drama to this race. Ecorse, 29-6.
Addison (0-3) at Manchester (3-0): The Flying Dutchmen's turnovers -- seven interceptions, four lost fumbles -- will eventually catch (er ... intercept?) up with them, but not this week. Manchester, 36-28.
Whitmore Lake (0-3) at Britton-Deerfield (2-1): The Trojans are showing signs of improvement under second-year coach Barry Pierson. Mark my words, they will win a game this year ... but not this week. Britton-Deerfield, 24-17.
SATURDAY
Cranbrook-Kingswood (2-1) at Father Gabriel Richard (2-1): Expect Fighting Irish running back Nick Pauze and the Gabriel Richard offensive line to impose its collective will on a relatively small Cranbrook D-line. Gabriel Richard, 34-7.
Last week record: 9-1 (.900); Season: 21-10 (.677); Readers' week: 7-3 (.700); Season record: 20-11 (.645).

I can not find a pick for the Lincoln vs Tecumseh game. Is it somewhere else?

Accidental omission. I'll take the Indians at home on the back of senior quarterback Brad Vannatter - who was a ringer on my championship winning under-5 rec soccer team I coached many moons ago. Undefeated, no goals against incase you were wondering.
