Win three games in a row.
And when Dexter running back Sequoyah Burke-Combs sped 50 yards up the gut for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, it put an exclamation point on the Dreadnaughts’ milestone 24-15 victory over the Phoenix in a Southeastern Conference White Division game Friday in Dexter.
“It’s been a long while (since Dexter’s won three straight),” said Dexter coach Tom Barbieri, freshly soaked with a celebratory Gatorade bath.
Dexter won three straight in 2005, the last time before that coming in 1989.
“It’s homecoming
we had a great day, great pep assembly, great week of practice and now we had a great game,” Barbieri said.
Dexter (4-2, 3-2) and Ypsilanti (2-4, 2-3) were deadlocked at 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter, when the Dreadnaughts offense sprung to life and their defense held its ground.
“Three games in a row for Dexter is a pretty big deal,” said linebacker Marshall Kellenberger, who anchored the Dreadnaughts’ defense with nine tackles, including two sacks.
“I've got to give credit to our defensive line,” he added. “On paper, I have a lot of tackles, but it’s our D-linemen going after their O-linemen that opens up holes for me to go through. We just held them, lockdown D tonight. That’s what we had to do and we won.”
