Leading that group is former Pioneer High School star Travis Maezes. Maezes is currently third in the Big Ten in hitting with a .459 average in league play and fourth in runs scored with 12. The freshman shortstop has excelled in the conference play, leading the team in average, runs, hits, slugging percentage and on-base percentage in nine Big Ten games.
"I had high expectations for myself," Maezes told the Detroit News. "I didn't put any numbers down on paper like, 'These are my goals.' I'm just trying to go out there and help my team win, get quality at-bats, take care of the ball in the field.
"I think we've (freshmen) done so well due to the leadership of our upperclassmen. They show us how to act. They've helped us every step of the way."
