Gabriel Richard advances with win over Olivet; Manchester, Central Academy fall
Kamari Davis might not be 100-percent healthy. But the sophomore guard was 100-percent accurate when it mattered most Monday night.
Davis made 10 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter of Father Gabriel Richard's 77-72 Class B regional semifinal win over Olivet at Williamston High School.
The Fighting Irish made a total of 25 free throws (out of 33 total points) over the final eight minutes to protect the narrow 44-42 lead they had after three quarters.
"We held on with free-throw shooting," coach Pete Schoch said. "We got that four-point lead, and we did a good job moving the basketball and using the clock."
Davis, who recently returned to the Gabriel Richard lineup, finished with a team-high 18 points. A five-point performance in last week's district championship win over Milan was Davis' first game in three weeks.
The Manchester High School boys basketball team was seeking its first regional win in almost 30 years, but the slipper didn't fit on Monday night.
"We're disappointed to lose, but we were Cinderella -- we weren't supposed to be there," Manchester coach Brad Gerbe said after his team lost 47-36 to Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central.
Foul trouble caught up to the Ann Arbor Central Academy boys basketball team Monday night and the possibility of continuing an historic season slipped out of its grasps in the final minutes of a 56-45 Class D regional semifinal loss.
The Falcons (17-4) led Allen Park Inter-City Baptist by a point at halftime and were still within four points late in the fourth quarter.
But by that point Inter-City had long been in the double bonus and Central Academy's leading scorer, 6-foot-6 senior center Sami Shalabi, had fouled out.
