Father Gabriel Richard boys basketball falls in CHSL championship

By Rich Rezler

DETROIT - There's no fifth leaf on the Fighting Irish's lucky clover.

The Father Gabriel Richard High School boys basketball team made its fifth consecutive trip to Calihan Hall for the Catholic High School League championships on Sunday afternoon, but a big Warren DeLaSalle third-quarter run ended its title streak at four.

Sterling Johnson scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, including a pair of key baskets during a 13-0 scoring streak that turned the game in DeLaSalle's favor. The Pilots defended their Division A-B title with a 55-44 victory.

"Once they get on top of you, it's no easy task to get back," Gabriel Richard coach Pete Schoch said. "But I thought we battled and had some opportunities."

Gabriel Richard moved up to compete in the league's larger division playoff after their streak of Division C-D titles, creating Sunday's rare matchup of defending champions going head-to-head. And through 18 minutes of game time, neither champion looked willing to give up its reign.

A Johnson 3-pointer early in the third quarter accounted for the game's seventh and final lead change. Shortly after, his steal and coast-to-coast fast break basket put the Pilots (16-3) up 40-29 with 3:57 left in the third quarter.

Gabriel Richard (12-6) never got back within eight points.
