Father Gabriel Richard boys bowling loses in quarterfinal, Saline's day ends in qualifying round
The Father Gabriel Richard boys bowling team was eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the MHSAA Division 3 team state championships Friday at Airport Lanes in Jackson.
The Fighting Irish were one of eight teams to advance from the morning qualifying block, but lost to Caro in a quarterfinal match play contest.
The Saline boys, the only other Washtenaw County team participating at four MHSAA championship sites across the state, did not advance at the Division 1 finals at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek.
Gabriel Richard was the fifth seed after qualifying and lost to No. 4 Caro in match play. Caro outscored the Fighting Irish 1,692 to 1,527 in a combination of total pinfall during four Baker games and one regular game.
The finish matches the Fighting Irish’s performance at last year’s state championship, when they advanced as the No. 5 seed before losing to No. 4 Muskegon Oakridge in quarterfinal match play.
Saline finished 10th in the Division 1 qualifying block with 3,378 pins, 66 shy of eighth-place Davison. Troy (3,559) and Salem (3,552) lead Division 1.
The finals aren't over for Saline's Aaron Ohl and Gabriel Richard's Michael Goike. They're two of eight local bowlers to qualify for the individual championships.
Those tournaments will begin Saturday morning, with action starting at 8:25 a.m. at four different locations.
The individual, or singles, tournament is similar to the team format. The top 16 out of 60 individuals in each division advance from the morning qualifying block to compete in a match play single-elimination tournament.
Washtenaw County participants include:
DIVISION 1 at M-66 Bowl, Battle Creek Girls: Cheyenne Long, Saline Boys: Mike Harrington, Pioneer; Devon Micou, Huron and Aaron Ohl, Saline
DIVISION 2 at Super Bowl, Canton Girls: Brittanie Divert, Milan Boys: Justin Hazel, Skyline and Coten Philipi, Milan
DIVISION 3 at Airport Lanes, Jackson Boys: Michael Goike, Father Gabriel Richard
