It took almost half of a period for the Father Gabriel Richard High School hockey team to shake off the rust from the long holiday break on Monday night at Yost Ice Arena. The temporary delay didn’t prove too detrimental to the Fighting Irish.

After giving up a goal in the opening two minutes of its game with Taylor Unified, Gabriel Richard scored the next four of the period on its way to a 10-2 victory.

Luke Peters got the scoring started for the Fighting Irish (4-3) tying the game at 1-1 with 9:19 remaining in the first off of a Mark Theisen assist. It was the start of a big period for Theisen who had three assists and a goal in the first.

“We were kind of shaking the cobwebs off at the beginning, and in the first half of the first period it was a challenge,” O’Brien said. “In the second half of the first period we had some more enthusiasm and created more opportunities.”

Theisen’s line mates Nick O’Brien and Ryan McNulty also had huge nights. O’Brien had four assists and McNulty had three goals and two assists.

“We were able to dress 22 tonight and rolled out four lines. I was happy I got contributions out of those guys when they were out there together,” O’Brien said, “and also it was good to get quality contributions from the third and fourth line guys, which will be important down the stretch.”

Colin McMahon recorded the win in net for the Irish with 14 saves on 16 shots faced.
