Father Gabriel Richard student among MHSAA scholarship recipients

By Rich Rezler

Father Gabriel Richard senior Natalia Collins is one of eight student-athletes from MHSAA Class B schools selected to receive scholarships through the Scholar-Athlete Award program.

Collins earned three varsity letters in basketball and soccer and two in volleyball for the Fighting Irish. She was an all-league, all-district, all-region and second team all-state soccer player in 2009.

A member of the National Honor Society, Collins was part of her school's Hurricane Katrina recovery program, attended its alternative spring break mission trip to Mexico in 2010 and volunteered at the Special Olympics the past two years. She plans to attend the University of Michigan to study biology or pre-dental.

Farm Bureau Insurance, in its 21st year of sponsoring the award, will give $1,000 college scholarship to a total of 32 individuals.

Class A honorees will be announced Feb. 23. Huron senior Ainsley McCallister is a finalist for that award.

A complete list of Class B, Class C and Class D winners is available on MHSAA.com. Each of the scholarship recipients will be honored at halftime ceremonies of the Class C Boys Basketball final game at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing on March 27.
