Championship day for Father Gabriel Richard: Baseball, boys and girls track win CHSL titles

By AnnArbor.com Staff

DETROIT - Eight and a half innings into the Catholic High School League C-D Division championship game at Comerica Park and suddenly a sense of urgency fell on the Father Gabriel Richard baseball team.

The Fighting Irish had managed eight hits off of Madison Heights Bishop Foley pitcher Jeff Schalk and walked three times, but still hadn't managed to score a run.

With the score knotted at zero, if somebody didn't score soon, Wednesday's game would be postponed indefinitely so the A-B Division game could get underway.

But Mattie DeDoes led off the bottom of the ninth with a single before Nolan Breymaier finished the day by singling home pinch-runner Tommy Repovz for a walk-off, 1-0 win.

A year after winning its first-ever Catholic League title, Richard claimed its second consecutive and broke a school record for wins (34) in the process.

"This one kind of validates that this program is not a fluke," said Irish Coach Greg Lenhoff. "From our standpoint, we're kind of making a statement within the Catholic League and the school."

The Irish reached the title game last season, but weren't able to compete at Comerica Park last year due to inclement weather.

"It was important to get back to Comerica because we had two seniors who earned the right to go, to win it last year and the weather took it away," Lenhoff said. "And the game itself was important because we had to get in a groove of playing good baseball again. We've been winning, but we haven't been in a groove."

Chris Ostrowski was the winning pitcher for the Irish (34-1), pitching all nine innings and striking out 14 while allowing three hits and walking three. Ostrowski has allowed 23 hits and eight runs all season.

Conor Dishman led the Irish offensively, going 3-for-5 from the plate.

BOYS TRACK When breaking down the Catholic High School League C-D Championship meet using times recorded at last weekend's regional tournaments, Father Gabriel Richard made itself a seven-point favorite to win its second straight title.

When the Fighting Irish's winning 3,200-meter team was disqualified early in the meet for an undergarment infraction - wiping out 10 of those anticipated points - they thought things were getting interesting.

Not really.

Led by some dominant performances in the field events, hurdles and distance races, the Fighting Irish scored 161 points to post a 60-point win over second-place Detroit Foley at Livonia Ladywood High School on Wednesday.

Dominic Leoni, Nate Donnellon and Matt Kendzicky all placed in both the shot put and discus to give Gabriel Richard a huge point advantage. Leoni won the discus with a throw of 152 feet, 4 inches.

Ryan Wawrzaszek swept the 110 and 300 hurdles for the third consecutive year and Mike Falvey added a third straight win in the 3,200-meter run.

Mark Grum, who was second to Falvey in the 3,200, picked up first-place finishes in the 800 and 1,600 runs and Rob Vandagriff, who was second in the 110 hurdles, won the high jump.

GIRLS TRACK If there was any question whether Father Gabriel Richard would win its sixth straight CHSL C-D Division title Wednesday at Livonia Ladywood, the answer came quickly.

The Fighting Irish won all four relays, finished first in seven of 12 individual events and claimed three of the six scoring spots in four different races.

That all added up to a dominant win, more than doubling second-place Royal Oak Shrine (209-94).

Simply winning seven individual events wasn’t enough for the Irish. They added the runner-up in five of those events.

Finishing 1-2 were Rebecca Meagher and Caitlin Brown in the long jump, Brown and Natalia Collins in the 400 dash, Kelly Bindon and Taylor Hinkson in the 300 hurdles, Anne Lawrence and Maddy LaFave in the 800 run, and Annie Patton and Sarah Lipinski in the 3,200 run.

Gabriel Richard also got first-place finishes from Alyssa Rawsky (high jump) and Molly Geppner (100 dash).
