Late last Thursday night, Henry Do returned to his Ann Arbor home after four days on the northern-tip of Michigan, competing at the Coca-Cola Junior Championship in Harbor Springs.

The following morning, the Greenhills School sophomore-to-be caught a flight to California for the Callaway Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines.

In short, the kid likes to golf.

And he’s good. Really good.

That much was evident in Do’s freshman campaign at Greenhills, which ended with numerous honors - including the AnnArbor.com Player of the Year.

Do had the lowest nine-hole average (36.8) in Washtenaw County, dissecting the nooks and crannies of every golf course he played in the process, and was the only area golfer to earn an individual medal at the state finals, placing third in Division 4. His state showing led the Gryphons to a fourth-place team finish, to boot.

Not a bad start to a high school for a kid who took up golf seven years ago.

“I started golfing when I was 8,” said the 15-year-old Do, who was introduced to the sport by his father, Kevin. Dad doesn’t play golf, just enjoys watching.

“One day he was like, ‘Here, watch this (golf on TV).’ And I was like, ‘OK.’”

Do liked what he saw and was soon on the greens for the first time, taking golf lessons from his godfather, Dave Kendall, the PGA professional who founded the Kendall Academy at Miles of Golf in Ann Arbor.

This year, Do brought what he learned to Greenhills.

His hopes heading into the season?

“I kind of wanted to just be a part of the team, play well, and try to make it to states,” he said. “Those were my main goals.”

Done and done.

After pacing the Gryphons to a No. 3 state-ranking in the regular season, Do kept the pace in the postseason.

The freshman swung into the medalist spot at a Division 4 district tournament with a 4-under 68, leading Greenhills to a district title, before doing the same at a regional, this time firing a 3-under 68.

“It was pretty exciting,” said Do. “I didn’t expect us to be this good. I kind of expected us to have an up and down year.

“I didn’t expect us to win districts and regionals.”

Nonetheless, Do and the Gryphons found themselves eyeing a state championship. Though a state title wasn’t in the scorecards, Greenhills finished a respectable fourth place. Do was third individually, penciling in a 151 during the two-day finals at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Ypsilanti.

“That’s not too bad …” says Do, who has three more years at Greenhills to help his team improve upon the finish, something he’s already thinking about - even during the offseason as he competes in tournaments across the country.

“Everybody’s returning (to the team) except two golfers,” noted Do. “That will be pretty exciting. I think, overall, we’ll be pretty solid.”
