Huron, Saline, Ypsilanti lose SEC games and more Friday night football results

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Seven turnovers cost the Huron High School football team any chance of upsetting unbeaten Monroe on Friday night.

“We just shot ourselves in the foot all night long,” said Huron coach Cory Gildersleeve. “The score doesn’t tell the story of this game.”

Three of Huron’s five interceptions came inside the Monroe 10-yard line and the River Rats also had a field goal blocked during a 42-21 Southeastern Conference Red Division loss in Monroe.

“It’s a huge momentum swing in the game when you’re not getting those points,” said Gildersleeve, whose team trailed 24-7 at halftime. “We made mistakes tonight that we haven’t made all season long.”

Jacob Nadeau rushed for 78 yards and three touchdowns for Monroe, which is now 5-0 overall and remains tied with Pioneer and Temperance Bedford at 3-0 in SEC Red play.

Gaetano Paolino led the Trojans with 88 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Huron (1-4, 1-2) quarterback Alex Hassan ran for a score and completed 19-of-39 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Parish Thomas and Kendall Thomas each caught touchdown passes.

Parish Thomas rushed for a team-high 55 yards.

After scoring a touchdown with 16 seconds remaining in regulation, Saline lost a Southeastern Conference Red Division game when Bedford’s Jon Prajzner scored a touchdown in overtime.

A 16-yard touchdown pass from Reese Dils to Derek Owings tied the game at 24-24 just two minutes after Bedford (4-1, 3-0) had taken a 24-17 lead.

Saline (2-3, 1-2) had the first overtime possession and Dylan Mulder kicked a 24-yard field goal to put the Hornets ahead. The Kicking Mules answered with Prajzner’s second touchdown of the game for the win.

Dils, who completed 8 of 16 passes for 84 yards, opened the game’s scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run.

After Prajzner’s 70-yard touchdown run put Bedford up 14-7 late in the second quarter, Saline’s Gage Hammond answered with a 99-yard kickoff return and Mulder kicked a 27-yard field goal in the final seconds of the half for a 17-14 lead.

Hammond caught four passes for 45 yards. Justin Barnes led the Hornets with 56 rushing yards on 16 carries.

Tecumseh 29, Ypsilanti 28 (OT)

Tecumseh tied the game with 22 seconds left in regulation, then kicked a game-winning point-after kick in overtime to win the Southeastern Conference White Division game.

Both teams scored touchdowns on their overtime possessions, but Ypsilanti (1-4, 0-3), which has struggled with point-after kicks, missed a two-point conversion attempt. Tecumseh scored and kicked the winner.

Marks put the Flyers (2-3, 2-1) ahead 13-0 in the second quarter with scoring runs of 63 and 1 yards and opened the third quarter-scoring with a 15-yard touchdown catch from Kareem Lovelace.

A battle of unbeaten Cascades Conference teams turned lopsided in the third quarter, when Manchester outscored the Comets by 24 points.

The Flying Dutchmen (5-0, 4-0) recovered two fumbles and blocked a punt to break open a game that was tied 14-14 at halftime.

“We needed to get things picked up in the third quarter,” Manchester coach Wes Gall said. “Our special teams put us in a spot to score and made the field short for us.”

Three of Manchester’s four scoring drives in the third quarter started in Hanover-Horton territory.

Hanover-Horton held Manchester quarterback Nate Bossory to 118 yards passing, but the Flying Dutchmen compensated by rushing for 221 yards on 27 carries. Kurasz carried the ball 18 times for 185 yards and two touchdowns.

“I think our kids adjusted well to the running game,” Gall said. “We’ve had to use it before. We’re not afraid to run against anybody.”

Josh Finley and Nick Cozart also had rushing TDs for Manchester while Bossory threw touchdown passes to Jake Osborne and Devin Jose.

Sand Creek 33, Whitmore Lake 14

Sand Creek returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown, giving the Aggies a 20-0 lead and momentum out of the locker room.

Whitmore Lake (0-5, 0-3) made a run at its Tri-County Conference rivals, pulling within 20-13 before Sand Creek (4-1, 3-0) put the game away.

Sam Paniccaci caught a 61-yard touchdown pass from Dylan St. Charles and William Wagner had a 15-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for the Trojans.

“Our kids are struggling to get over the hill and taste success,” Whitmore Lake coach Barry Pierson said. “(Sand Creek) is a really sound team. They're coached well.”
