Manchester gets past Napoleon, Father Gabriel Richard wins by forfeit and more

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Manchester High School football team overcame its offensive struggles to erase a 19-7 second-half deficit and win at Cascades Conference rival Napoleon on Thursday night.

With the Flying Dutchmen protecting a 20-19 lead late in the game, Napoleon elected to let them score to have a chance to tie the game with 65 seconds remaining. The strategy didn't work and Manchester (2-0) escaped with a 27-19 victory.

  • "He (Bossory) was under pressure. (Napoleon) had a pretty good defensive end who was pressuring the ball," Manchester coach Wes Gall said. "Give credit to them, they played extremely hard on both offense and defense."

Manchester started the game on the better side of a turnover, recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff and scoring just three plays into the game. That would be all from the Dutchmen offense until midway through the third quarter and Napoleon quarterback Hayden Witte threw three touchdown passes to lead the Pirates on a 19-0 run.

"The first half was Murphy's Law, everything that could go wrong did go wrong," said Gall, noting Manchester's two lost fumbles and interception.

Early in the fourth quarter the Dutchmen scored again on a 14-yard touchdown reception by Josh Finley to take back the lead. Finley finished the game with five catches for 99 yards and a touchdown.

"This week, maybe we were a little too loose," Gall said. "They outperformed us in the first half."

Father Gabriel Richard 2, Windsor Assumption 0 (forfeit)

Father Gabriel Richard team was supposed to play Windsor Assumption Thursday night, but won by forfeit when the Canadian team had complications getting across the border.

Gabriel Richard coach Brian Lemons arranged a two-quarter scrimmage with Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett before dismissing his team for the long weekend. Liggett's scheduled game against Plymouth Christian was also forfeited.

“With such a young team, it was nice to get them some game experience,” Lemons said.

PERRY 20, WHITMORE LAKE 14 Boxscore at MLive.com

Mark Jenkins ran for 109 yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown and Sam Paniccaci had eight rushes for 58 yards and a score, but Whitmore Lake fell to Perry 20-14 on Wednesday.

Whitmore Lake coach Barry Pierson thought his team played well enough to win, but penalties on calls Peirson did not agree with kept the Ramblers' game-winning, fourth-quarter drive alive.

"I told the coach he was lucky," Pierson said. "It could've gone either way, really."

The Trojans (0-2) got the ball back after Perry (1-1) broke a 14-14 tie, but time ran out on their attempt to tie the game at the end.

Paniccaci broke his ankle late in the game and will be out for the season, further decimating an already-thin roster. The school's junior varsity game had to be canceled earlier in the week so the varsity would have enough players.
