It took nearly nine minutes for the Pioneer High School field hockey team to score its first goal of the Michigan High School Field Hockey Association playoffs on Monday, but only another 35 seconds to go ahead 2-0.
Julia Franceschi’s successive goals with 21 minutes, 47 left in the first half, and then again at 21:12, put Dexter in a hole from which it would never recover. The Pioneers won 6-0, ending the Dreadnaughts’ inaugural varsity season.

“We knew going into this we would be major underdogs,” said Dexter coach Craig Flocken of facing the five-time defending state champs in the program’s second-ever playoff game. “They showed why they are state champs.”
Dexter ended the season 8-6-3 and was the only MHSFHA Division IV team to make it to the second round of the playoffs.
“We’re happy with what the future looks like over in Dexter,” Flocken said.
In addition to Franceschi, five more Pioneer players made it to the score sheet with Morgan Barroso scoring two goals, Emy Guttman and Clanci Mackenzie scoring one apiece and Sydney Supica and Beth Johnson each tallying assists.
Emma Hamstra and Yoojin Chang split time in net for the Pioneers (11-2-2), facing no shots. Sarah Prielipp made 18 saves in net for Dexter.
“One of the things we always work on is team work. Everybody is important, everybody takes that to heart,” Pioneer coach Jane Nixon said. “You count on your seniors to have experience, and working with other athletes in postseason play. Gotta love the seniors.”
Pioneer will play Farmington Hills Mercy in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at Dearborn Edsel Ford High School. The game time has yet to be determined.
