Milan softball finishes second at Saline Invitational; Lincoln boys track wins invite, girls place second and more Saturday results

Milan lost to Ida 4-2 in the championship game of the Saline Invitational Saturday. Milan won its other three games by a combined 29-0, giving up only eight hits while winning two games by mercy.

The Big Reds opened the day with a 10-0 win over host Saline in five innings. Courtney Brothers was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored for the Big Reds. Kat Hoffman got the win and had eight of her 28 strikeouts in the game. Saline managed only three hits and struggled without Emily Ouellette, who was out for the Hornet's first two games at another school function.

Milan topped Monroe 7-0 and West Bloomfield 12-0 in its next two games. Hoffman got the win in both, allowing just four total hits. MacKenzie Quinn had four hits in the two games and scored three times. Lani Ernst and Brothers each scored three times.

In the title game Ida got off to a 2-1 lead after two innings. Milan tied the game in the third but gave up two runs in the fourth to give the Bluestreaks a 4-2 win and the tournament title.

Ernst and Quinn each had two hits, and Hoffman struck out six in taking the loss.

In other tournament action, Saline beat Monroe 6-1 and lost to West Bloomfield 4-2. The Hornets used a five-run third inning to pull away from Monroe. Chelsie Leathers scored twice and Ouellette was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Kristina Zalewski had 11 strikeouts to pick up the win.

Against West Bloomfield, Saline took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth where the Lakers scored three times. Zalewski, a freshman, was brilliant, striking out 19 with only one earned run in the loss.

"I wish she could have won," against West Bloomfield, "she was pitching great, she just got a little rattled in the sixth," said Saline coach Alicia Seegert. " She's just a freshman, with 30 strikeouts in two games! Most people would be happy about that for three games or four.

"She's gonna be the real deal."

Ann Arbor Huron went 0-3 at the eight-team tournament. The River Rats lost to Northville 26-0, Ida 16-1 and Battle Creek Lakeview 15-0.

MORE SOFTBALL
Ypsilanti 13, Wayne Memorial 0; Ypsilanti 11, Wayne Memorial 0: Emily Bearman pitched a no-hitter with six strikeouts and only one walk in the first game. Her catcher Africa Schaumann, who was celebrating her birthday, hit a two-run homer and had three hits, three RBIs and three runs. In game two, Megan Winkelseth gave up only one hit and struck out six. Amber Frye had a home run with two RBIs and two runs scored and Megan Kelly scored three times. Manchester 1, Blissfield 0; Blissfield 8, Manchester 6; St. Mary's Catholic Central 10, Manchester 0: Chelsea Barker struck out 10 in a seven inning shutout in the opener. The Lady Dutch (8-5) started in a 6-0 hole after the first inning of the nightcap, but closed the gap to one by the top of the fourth. The Royals (6-3) added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame and held on to win. St. Mary's mercied Manchester in five innings.

BASEBALL
Milan 6, Salem 5; Salem 5, Milan 3: Michael Craig hit a two-run single in the fifth inning to tie the first game, and a home run in the seventh to put Milan (12-4) ahead. With a runner on second and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Austin Farmer came to the mound in relief of Barry Bock and got the only batter he faced to fly out. The top of the Big Reds order struggled in the nightcap, "A lot of our runs came from the bot of our lineup. When we needed big hits from the top of the lineup we just couldn't get it today," said Milan coach Adam Giles. "We played good defense and had good pitching were in the game because of it." Summit Homeschool 15, Greenhills 3; Summit 4, Greenhills 3: The Gryphons took early leads in both games only to see them slip away. Holding a 2-0 lead after the first inning in game one, Greenhills made a critical error in the second inning and Summit put seven runs on the scoreboard. In the second game, Greenhills lost a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Alec Khouri had six hits and scored twice for Greenhills.(Game 1 Boxscore | Game 2 Boxscore)

Saline 7 Novi 2; Rochester Adams 5, Saline 2: Following his team's two games today, Saline coach Scott Theisen told his team they played 12 very good innings of baseball. The only problem was, the Hornets played 13 innings total. One bad inning against Rochester Adams, where Saline walked five batters and gave up four runs, was likely the difference between a split and a 2-0 record at the Saline Invitation. Mark Weist had a hit and a run in the loss to Adams and was 2-3 with two runs and two RBIs in the win over Novi. Al Zeiher struck out 10 in six innings of work against Novi to run his record to 4-0 on the season. (Game 1 Boxscore | Game 2 Boxscore)

Battle Creek Harper Creek 5, Clinton 3; Clinton 8, Dearborn Edsel Ford 2, Clinton 3, Eaton Rapids 0: The Redskins (8-4) finished in third place a the Eaton Rapids Invitational. Rylie Robinson pitched a gem in the third place game, giving up five hits and striking out 13 in a complete game shutout. Hayden Craig was 2-for-3 with a run against Eaton Rapids. BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
Charger Invitational: Lincoln athletes won six events at the Dearborn Heights Crestwood meet as the team finished first out of 15 teams. The Railsplitters finished 1-2 in the 100-meter dash (Clay Holman 10.8, Marcus Williams 10.9) and the 300-meter hurdles (Holman 41.3, David Jenkins 42.1). Other individual winners were Latwan Wesley with a long jump of 20-feet, six inches and Holman in the 200-meter dash in 22.3 seconds. Winning relay teams were the 800-meter group of Jori Griffin, Peter Zieske, George Miller and Wesley in 1:35 and the 400-meter team of Wesley, Holman, Miller and Williams in 44 seconds flat. COED TRACK AND FIELD
Saline wins Milford Balawader Classic Co-Ed Relays: Saline's girls and boys teams joined forces Saturday for an unconventional event which the Hornets have taken a liking to. The Hornets have won the co-ed event three of the past four years. "The cool thing about it is the kids really get into the co-ed aspect of it, the boys don't want to let the girls down and vice versa" said Saline girls coach Mike Smith, "Its probably their most enjoyable meet." Saline swept the distance relay aspect of the meet which included a 4x3200-meter relay (won by Nick Renberg, Andrew Harper, Kate Carter, Alex Leptich), a 4x1600 (Joe Lipa, Andrew Barnett, Alyssa Cummings, Amy Creutz), 4x800 (Harper, Nate Martis, Leptich, Carter) and a distance medley relay (Martis, Barnett, Cummings, Creutz). The Hornets finished with 74.5 points and Monroe/Milford was second with 60.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Charger Invitational: The Lincoln girls track team broke four meet records and finished second in Division 1 at the invite hosted by Dearborn Heights Crestwood. Dynasty McGee broke the record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.2 seconds. McGee and Lauren Ross both were part of winning teams for the Railsplitters in the 400-meter relay, 800-meter relay, 1600-meter relay. "We were a little bit short handed today," Lincoln coach Andy Ames said. "Our goal today was to improve." The Railsplitters face Chelsea Tuesday in a matchup of undefeated SEC squad. "It will be a tough meet. We'll need our best to beat them," Ames said. (Results)

Ann Arbor Huron third at Robert Shumake Relays: Anna Masini shaved a second off of her personal best finishing in 46.28 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles and Huron placed third in a deep event hosted by Detroit Renaissance. Huron finished with 53 points while second place Southfield had 62. First place Troy had 86. (Results)

BOYS LACROSSE
Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central 7, Pioneer 5: Pioneer had the ball in the offensive zone trailing 6-5 late in the game but took a costly penalty that prevented them from getting the tying goal. Kevin Grupe scored twice and goalie Mike Jones had 26 saves for Pioneer (2-5). Aidan Barrer added a goal and an assist.(Boxscore)

Greenhills 11, Ypsilanti 7: Jack Schueller paced the Gryphons with four goals and two assists. Freshman attacker Henry Aspegren chipped in with three goals and an assist. "Back-to-Back games are always tough, and coming off of a victory as big as the Huron game - well, we knew a let down was bound to happen. But take nothing away from the Ypsilanti effort, they played us tough. I was very concerned." said Greenhills coach Mike Costello. Greenhills outshot the Phoenix 38 to 22. (Boxscore)

BOYS GOLF
Saline finishes 12th at Traverse City Central Invitational: Saline shot a 641 over two days. "It was a great bonding experience for the guys, Today we shot a 318, our lowest 18 holes of the year." said Saline coach Debbie Williams-Hoak. Senior Peter Spitler finished tied for 12th and made the all-tournament team Petosky's Joey Garber, last year's Mr. Golf, was the medalist and Grand Blanc (593) finished first a team. GIRLS WATER POLO
Saline Invitational: Saline and Huron met for the fourth time this season, and for the first time the No. 3 ranked River Rats won, defeated the second-ranked Hornets, 10-5. Saline won its two other games on the day, 11-3 over Grand Blanc and 11-8 over Troy. Dexter went 1-1 on the day with 5-3 loss to Birmingham Groves and an 11-9 win over Grand Blanc.
