The Huron High School girls water polo team won a district title Saturday, edging Skyline 9-8 in the title game at Birmingham Seaholm.

Jamie Hobbs and Maia Bolhuis each had four goals to help the No. 4-ranked River Rats top their No. 3-ranked cross-town rival.

"We've had some really close one- and two-goal games with Skyline, Huron coach Justin Thoresen said. “Skyline has a great team and a great program. We really stuck to our gameplan and held on for the win.”

Meredith Bell scored three goals for Skyline, which made things interesting by outscoring Huron 4-2 in the fourth quarter.

"We had to work really hard to gain that momentum and stifle theirs," Thoresen said. "We held on for the ride and stifled a couple of their opportunities."

After Huron got the ball with a minute, remaining, the River Rats ran the shot clock down and Eder came up with a huge save just as time was expiring to secure the win.

The top four teams advance to regional competition May 18-19 at Birmingham Groves.

Okemos wins water polo district at Saline

Okemos, the state’s second-ranked team, had little trouble cruising through a district at Saline High School on Saturday.

Pioneer beat Saline 6-2 in the third-place game. Those teams will join Dexter in regional play May 18-19 at Birmingham Groves.
